Pete was intended to be over the top. He is a disgraced blue-blood who has been fawning for his father's attention his entire life. The character is accurately despicable.

No kidding

Like what are you thinking?

The actual answer is likely Pete trying to copy the behavior of those he saw around him in power to try to feel some power. Since he couldn't pull the women that Don could he took what he could get.

As a wise man said: "Oh it's not better, it's just different."

If anything Pete is the one who redeems himself while Don is a continuous cheat and alcoholic. I could definitely be misremembering but wasn't his tryst with Peggy the only one of the whole show? It's no excuse, but it's not something he continues to do throughout the series (if I'm remembering right, but maybe not).

Anyway, he's the one that actually has to save Don's arse later and covers for him on multiple occasions once they all go off and start their own company.

I actually think the best looking woman of all of Don's affairs was the teacher.

But overall yes, Trudy, Betty, and Joan were all the best looking.

And for those that don't know, Alison Brie has done nude scenes. Interestingly enough, she hooks up with the guy that played Harry Crane in the show GLOW.

He also gets obsessed with his neighbor's wife. I think it's the one that wrecks his marriage for a bit.

But he certainly is redeemed throughout the show.

Oh yeah, that's right. Now that I think about it, does Trudy ever find out about Peggy?

Was his character way over acted or was that a creative decision by the actor or director for him to talk all unbelievable and over the top like? Seriously I watched the first few seasons but cringed every time he was on the screen.

Agree. But he seemed to settle into it after a while.

Mad Men being one of the best shows ever is killed by Pete Campbell.

Pete is a perfect insecure foil for Don. His bravado is over-compensating for the fact he knows he doesn't belong....sort of like Don and how he fears vulnerability.

Pete knows he got the job because of his parents name and knows they don't really like him and for whatever reason are embarrassed by him. When Pete asks them for money, they say no and Pete cries, "you've never given me anything!". And they respond, " we gave you our name".

When Pete tries to get Don fired early on for being an imposter, much like Pete probably feels when we see him absent his fake bravado....

Bert tells Don, ,"Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer, one never knows where loyalty born."

And Pete ends up being Don's biggest champion when the agency turns on him.

Pete is vital to the story, puts a light on Don's weakness and gives us the weirdest instant boxing fight out of nowhere in TV.

Now, Ginsberg can go....and that annoying assistant who kisses everyone's arse and wants to marry Joan even though he's gay. But Pete is an essential character to the show.

Pete was perfectly acted. He was supposed to be an annoying frick and that pain in the arse for Don.

I seem to remember him not obsessing over his career. One of those TV actors who didn’t own a TV. He also was a problem on the set of Titans on the old DC streaming service when he played The Scarecrow.

What you are describing is writing, not acting. It was horrendous over acting.

Pete is like Nelly Olsen and her mom in Little House on the Prairie.

The actors who played them should all get special Emmys for playing the characters you most want to slap the shite out of.

They all fluff for Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon).

Side question, does New York still have old money? Or is it all transplants and new money now?
