Anyone watching this on HBO? Noir style detective/courtroom drama. I personally think it's fantastic. First show that the wife and I are butts in seats as soon as the new episode premiers.

It's good. Glad HBO has already renewed it. I'm not sure I needed a gritty back story for Perry Mason but I'm glad we finally got to him being a lawyer.

There's a Perry Mason thread on here, might have dropped to page two but it will pop up again tonight. It's an excellent series.

Many one gay but the secretary?

I mean It’s almost getting played out at this point. They gave that character a personal life just to add a lesbian to the show.

I don’t mind gay representation but not every strong female has to be a lesbian and not every lesbian has to be a no nonsense badass. It’s becoming a cliche, and I hate Saying that because I do think there should be lesbian and gay characters.

I just expect it now. There are certain quotas a show must, must fill. At least 1 gay or lesbian character, preferably 1 of each. At least 1 mixed race couple. At least 1 minority character that faces racism. At least one woman who faces sexism. And since the show is set in the early 30s, you bet I already knew there was gonna be plenty of time spent covering racism and sexism. God forbid a show about Perry Mason just be a good mix of detective work and courtroom drama. in today's Hollywood, you WILL be lectured on the evils of cis-white America, and you better get used to it.

I just fast forward through those parts. Apparently I'm not missing anything because I love the show even while not watching about 3-5 minutes of every episode.

It's a good thing you did. I watched them and I turned gay.

Yeah I'm not necessarily a fan of all these dark interpretations of classics. As a stand alone story though it really is a gem. I wish there were more in the same style.

I think PM does it well. Incorporates it into the story. The backgrounds of the characters will become important as the series progresses. As long as its woven into the plot and not just a loose thread for the sake of checking a box I'm fine with it. Same with the race relations. They are all consistent with the time period and they are compelling and necessary to tell the story.

Well, not everyone. However, Della's character likes visiting the other side as it seems Hamilton Burger's does too based on his mannerisms.

Paul Drake being a black cop is a big switch but well acted by Chris Chalk.

Been a good 7 episodes so far and glad it was picked up for another season.

Oh damn...for some reason I thought this was just a mini-series.

HBO opted to bring it back next season and announced that sometime in late July.

I think this season only has 1 more episode left, so they are not making them like the old TV series where you can have 20+ episodes a season.

It is good, but it completely different from the original series. Perry seems out of control in the Courtroom, which they chalk up to inexperience, but he was always the smartest guy in the room in the original series, even as a young lawyer. All the stuff about Sister Alice is ridiculous. Great acting though.

Hamilton Burger is closeted per the dinner with Della in last night's episode

The goal seems to be to have the original TV characters in place at the end of the season (Mason, Street, Drake, Burger), but I hope that next season they'll bring back Shea Whigham as Pete Strickland. It's a new character for HBO and I'd hate to see Drake completely replace Pete as Mason's P.I.

I don't know----he made it pretty clear in last night's episode he was done with Mason. But it is TV, so things change.

I can actually see flashbacks with John Lithgow being in the mix next season. Seems an awfully short stint for him to be out in, what, 4 episodes????

OK, I missed the previews this week. Next week is the last episode for this season from what I gather as they are only showing 8 episodes made.
