I finally got around to watching it. It was an okay movie, but I don't see how it won so many awards. What am I missing?

Parasite was a good movie but the only reasons why it won the Oscar for Best Picture over 1917 is because of its message and it checking a few boxes on the diversity sheet. A foreign film had also never won Best Picture so they were going for the history aspect as well.

No. This movie not only dominated critics top 10 lists, but it also topped basically all of its competition in terms of user ratings on IMDB/Metacritic/Rotten Tomatoes/etc.

If you look at the Parasite thread on this board (prior to the Oscars), you would notice the posts from users on this site were overwhelmingly positive with many calling it the best movie of the year. It really wasn't until after it won all the oscars that all of a sudden people started calling it overrated or undeserving.

Now of course, people are free to dislike it, or have the opinion that it is overrated, but it didn't dominate the oscars or win the palme d'or because of some political statement. It was just that almost everyone who saw the movie loved it.

My thoughts, too. Foreign, anti-capitalism, anti-wealth disparity, millennials with useless college degrees who can't get jobs.

“If you win best foreign film, you should automatically be invalid to win best pitcher!”

what is all this recent Parasite backlash all about? It's a damn good movie.

Yeah, it did. It was also a great movie. You could make an argument for some others, but I thought Parasite was deserving.

It appears that Rex liked 1917 better. I liked 1917 as well because of the way that it was shot but to each their own

I don’t get the backlash for it either. I thought 1917 was the best picture of the year, but I can clearly see why Parasite did end up winning. Two of my favorite movies from that year.

Up until 2016, South Korea was run by a cult that operated in the shadows. This cult is an extension of existing cults operating out of San Francisco and London:

Okay. So? I never said it was a bad movie. It was quite good. However, replace the cast with white actors and I doubt the film is as well received as it was.

It most certainly loses Best Director to Sam Mendes if it had been directed by a Steve Smith or someone similarly named.

This is a stupid "what if" exercise.

Is wet replaced the cast with white people, we'd have a Korean-set movie about Korean social problems that makes no sense.

If we replaced one of the most well-respected and popular directors in the world, yeah, it wouldn't have won best director. Because one of the most well-respected and popular directors in the world, already known for his talent level, would not have directed it.

Yes, if the movie was a totally different movie that didn't have cast and director, it would not have made the waves it did. It would, again, be a totally different movie.

Just like if Sam Mendes didn't direct 1917, and it didn't have all those stupid British cameos, it would have also been a different movie that would have received far fewer accolades.

So you agree Parasite doesn’t get its accolades if it wasn’t set in Asia? Thanks.

I thought Parasite was great. So was 1917. I had no problem with Parasite winning.

My personal favorite was Jojo Rabbit....at least I think it came out that year.

The Best Picture nominees were pretty solid that year, and had more mass appeal than the usual Oscar fare. I thought Parasite, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, Ford v Ferrari, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Joker were all great.

Haven't watched The Irishman, Little Women, or Marriage Story.

I thought it was an incredibly well shot movie, but I’d still go with 1917.

It was heavy handed with the symbolism, and I had a hard time figuring out whose “story” I was seeing.

. Yes. They were all good movies. A really solid line up that year.
