Bump. I’m 5 episodes in, I really like it. I’ve never seen the anime so nothing to compare it to.

It’s silly but they’ve made it work. The guy who plays Luffy is just awesome, love the constant optimism and excitement. I’m not an anime guy but it’s making me want to watch it just to learn more about the world.

ETA: Really hope this doesn’t become a writers strike casualty

Yikes, they gonna do a time jump or something? The actors that play Luffy, Nami, and Kobe are all early 20’s, so hopefully their appearance doesn’t change too much.

In their defense that chick that's playing Koby was the most "gender-neutral" portrayal I've ever seen. Looked like and portrayed the role as a feminine, soft spoken boy the whole way thru

I had no idea the actor playing Koby wasn’t a boy.

same. weird to me that people go out of their way looking for this stuff when it isn't part of the show

Anyone start watching the anime because of this show?

I went and started watching about where the live action ended (even though the stories and timelines aren’t a perfect match).

I don’t know, I made it through one episode, anime/manga is so weird to me. The crazy overreacting characters, whole episodes where basically nothing happens, 10 minutes of filler reaction shots.

Not sure I can do it

I will say the characters in the live action look and act almost exactly like the cartoon.

I think it works for the character as being a bit undersized and physically unimposing. Despite this clear handicap, Koby still wants to be a Marine. Sort of like Mulan, but no great gender reveal incoming.

The actor is a 'boy' because that's what is called for as Koby.

Seemed pretty clear to me, but it works for the story, and there's no fuss made about it in the world.

I was gonna start watching the anime until I found out there were over 1000 episodes (and counting).

It's the animation, for me, that's keeping me from watching. Plus the pacing of those shows just throws me. There's a tone with the acting that I don't get. Even going back to the early Godzilla movies, some scenes and emotions are just way overdone. It's a style I've never warmed up to.

Still, I'm considering checking out the anime, even if I'll almost certainly never finish it.

There are limits to even how much YouTube I can watch.

I just tried to watch some more of the anime last night, I’m with you don’t know that I can do it.

I mean, there is something to be said for the fact that it’s designed for kids and I’m not a kid, so I don’t mean to trash the show. I got through 1 1/2 episodes (started on episode I think 54 bc they were in a storyline that wasn’t in the live action). I fell asleep, I go back to the fact that entire anime episodes are centered over one insignificant thing that doesn’t advance the story or contribute to character development at all. I suppose that’s what happens when you have 1000 episodes

It's designed for adolescent boys. Not kids.

Are adolescent boys not considered kids to you?

There's a big difference between Dora the explorer and one piece where people get stabbed and blood goes everywhere.

One piece also has a ton of sexual innuendo. Is a 7 year old understanding that?

The main characters start at about 17 years old and after the timeskip are about 19, with other crew members in their early 20s and others around 30.

What kids show is full of characters in their late teens/early20s to 30s?

It's meant for boys aged 13 and up and a lot of the original readers/viewers are still following the story since its been going on for so long.

I just think calling it a "kids show" is a wrongly applied and indiscriminate label that implies it's more like blues clues or Dora the explorer, which are actually "kids" shows and appeal no further by intention.

This is a weird rant, so it’s meant for young boys and not kids, I think most people understood what I meant
