Easily one of my favorite Stanley Kubrick films and one of Peter Sellers best roles. All three of them.

The Doomsday Machine

Sterling Hayden played a good part and Scott was a better general in this movie than in Patton

Tracy Reed was hot in it

Seen it twice (this weekend for the 2nd time actually). Had some funny parts but still think it's meh. I don't get it. Must be me.

Sterling Hayden was a certified badass IRL. Served in the OSS behind German lines during WWII.

And there was a good chance he really was that crazy IRL.

Water fluoridation is a real thing

from wiki

quote:

Opposition to fluoridation has existed since its initiation in the 1940s.[2] During the 1950s and 1960s, some opponents of water fluoridation suggested that fluoridation was a communist plot to undermine public health.[9]

Ripper: Have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water?
Mandrake: Well, I can't say I have, Jack.
Ripper: Vodka, that's what they drink, isn't it? Never water?
Mandrake: Well, I-I believe that's what they drink, Jack, yes.
Ripper: On no account will a Commie ever drink water, and not without good reason

Gen. Buck Turgidson on the phone in the War Room with Ms Scott, after finding out about the impending nuclear war:
"Ol' Bucky'll be back just as soon as he can... All right... And listen, suge... Don't forget to say your prayers!"

and the ending with the Vera Lynn song is classic. Sellers pitched the song to Kubrick.

Great movie, and was banned in most parts of the country when first released due to the fear factor of the movie. Threat of nuclear war was at an extreme and most movie goers did not realize the comic genius of the film.
