honestly, in his situation, I wouldn't give a frick what anyone thought either. Go back to the scene where he explains where he disappeared for a few days to his counselor so he could get out of the hospital earlier in season two. All of that stuff was truth, and amounts to really an extremely hard life.
I'd tell the world to frick off too. He may be a dick, but he's as strong as anyone alive, and living it out.

Maybe he shows the strength you speak of in the coming seasons but right now he's just a failed man facing his own mortality and acting out without any regard for those around him.
