SPOILERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
This won't have much for spoilers, but I figure I'd offer the disclaimer so I don't get bitched out.
I enjoyed it.
Bale is about as overhyped as an actor as there is. Don't get me wrong, he's done some good work (American Psycho, Machinist), but he's always a bit overplayed, and he doesn't seem to bring a lot of original dynamics to any character.
It's a damn shame Heath Ledger died. Not just because of the possibility of more Batman flicks, but because unlike Bale, he brings a dynamic to every role. Whether he's playing a gay cowboy, an emanation of Bob Dylan, or the Joker, Ledger embodies the character. Each character has a different set of ticks and mannerisms; each character is his own. He really was one of, if not THE, best young actors around.
That said, Ledger is a force in this movie. Outside of the action scenes, nearly every moment he's on the screen sizzles. I took a particular liking to the scene where he's being held in captivity and Batman is questioning him. The tension and energy of that scene alone is phenomenal.
The writing, generally, is sound. There were some very cliched, over the top, campy styled lines that could be distracting (almost all from Batman).
Aside from Ledger, I'm impressed with Gary Oldman. His portrayal of Gordon is probably the second best acting job in the flick. Caine as Alfred is quite good as well.
First 1/3 is definitely builder, but it begins on a high, high note. It's 2 1/2 hours but never boring. That's a feat in itself. Nolan really packed A LOT into this film.
As for Nolan, he's a hell of a director. He's got a great eye behind the camera. It's interesting to see him take on such a huge franchise. He knows how to make a good film.
Overall, greatly enjoyable to watch. Deserving of its accolades. Definitely not a top 5 film or anything like that... but very, very good.

i definitely agree with this but we'll probably both get bashed for it, people around here love him. he seems extremely one dimensional to me, never brings any real depth to his characters

exactly. it's not that he's inherently bad. it's just that he's not really great either.
and the "Batman voice" is annoying as hell.

say what you want about Bale's acting, but there is no denying that he is the most talented young guy in hollywood.
his dialect and such are incredible. Just watch the array of voices he has.
I think he's been a solid batman, not amzing, but solid. He definately fits the role
Heath Ledger will go down as the greatest villian of all time IMO. That is how good it was.
Outside of that, very good movie. I'll need to see it again to catch everything.
Rachel Dawes (Ghyllenhall chick) HAS to atleast be decent looking. It was comical trying to portray that girl as decent looking.

which works when he's playing an doucebag rich guy (batman, american psycho) or a guy without emotions (equilibrium), but he looks weird when he tries to use his face to show emotion in a regular setting

He wasn't even the best young guy in his biggest movie.
i can think of quite a few young actors who i think are better.

who do yall think the next villan will be....I dont think nolan would pick anybody who is just completely unrealistic (ex: poison ivy, mr freeze, etc.). If I had to guess i think it will be either the Riddler or the Penguin. Thoughts

no really i think bale was good for the batman role, because batman just has to be solemn, handsome, and asskicking. he did all three. it doesnt seem like a part that demands a lot of ridiculous acting.

I bought midnight tickets weeks ago, and I was not disappointed at all. I could not believe how awesome this movie was. I had chills for the entire first Joker seen. I left this movie unbelievably amped. Easily the greatest action movie that I've ever seen. I'm going to watch atleast 2 more times in theatres to decide if it is the best movie I've ever seen. This is by far the best written action movie of all time. It was unbelievably clever.

My favorite seen by far was when The Joker slammed that guys head into the pencil. That was just great writing. I also loved it when he would explain how he got his scars. WHAT A GREAT MOVIE!

It was a fantastic film. It was just a wonderful movie going experience, probably the best time i've ever had in a theatre. Ledger's Joker is probably the best villain ever in a film and I say this after loving villains and seeing many many movies, but I have never felt as "chilled" and excited for a villain ever. I know there was talk about an oscar for Ledger and if he doesn't get nominated that is a major travesty. Definitelly a must see.

disappearing pencil was amazing. The scene basically said,"Heath Ledger is dead. I am the joker now, and I am fricked up. If you frick with me, you will die, and I will laugh at you. And the next 2 hours of your life will be mayhem."

Also, the manager at the Rave on O'Neil told us that the mall had to open up all 16 of their theaters last night and that they had already opened up 9 and hope to sell out as well. That's pretty insane.

Ledger was legitimately terrifying. I mean, I don't think I've ever been more freaked out or captivated by a character. He completely owned the theater. He evoked whatever response out of the audience he wanted. It was incredible.
His performance overshadowed very good ones by Bale and Eckhart. Theirs were solid. Heath was legendary.
