One of the more believable parts of the movie tbh.
Small town, close quarters in the record shop, and he’s got irrational confidence without being super hung up on her. Ian can definitely pull Nikki in those conditions.

Yeah in a small college town these types of relationships were pretty damn common. Dudes just have some high confidence with decent looks and they can absolutely pull well out their league.
One of the crazier ones I saw was some skinny 5 foot 4 dude dating some 6 foot tall insanely hot goth girl. Good for him though

If he thought the wish was serious then sure. But he didn’t and it’s what surprised him. So your initial premise is wrong.

I mean he didn’t know it was real at first but he certainly knew at some point and never really tried to end the wish (even when he called the line he only wanted to alter the wish). He didn’t even try to do much to fix it until after Sarah was murdered in front of him.
Even if you give him the complete benefit of the doubt for the first couple days, she at the very least was not mentally stable
There’s no real way to slice it other than Bear being the villain at the end of the day. Even if the basis of his initial wish didn’t have bad intentions or didn’t think it was real, his resulting decisions did.

Bear is an accidental cause of a self-inflicted wound by “be careful of what you wish for”.
Is he limp wristed? Sure. Did he fumble in decision making to find resolution? Sure. But villain implies an intention to harm a hero. In this case there isn’t one except the demon.

What’s the first thing he asks the customer service guy on the phone? He doesn’t want to release Nikki he wants to make it easier on himself to own her
What does he tell Nikki when her true self is able to speak to him in the bedroom? He isn’t interested in letting her go, he asks if her imprisonment is really that bad.
What does he do after the party when she harms herself? He's not worried about Nikki he, knows it’s not really even her, he just wants her to “be like Nikki”
Just because someone isn’t aggressively awful or physically abusive doesn’t mean they’re not evil. When you have responsibility over a life and you allow that life to come to harm or death because doing the right thing is inconvenient you’re evil. Letting a pet starve to death is evil even if you look pathetic about it after the fact.

Eh early on you could say sure she was fricked up the one night. But after the dinner scene at the very least she's clearly mentally unwell. So best not to take advantage of a mentally unstable person especially your friend/girl friend

From the dinner scene on he absolutely knew something was wrong with Nikki whether it be black magic or something mentally unwell he knew she was off. Instead he kept taking advantage of her and only tried to fix it when the relationship was no longer working for him.
