Norm Macdonald's John Belushi take: He wasn't funny, he was just a great actor

It originates from a clip I heard a while back where he spoke of Farley's insecurities, always stating that he just wanted to be as funny as Belushi, whereupon Norm would answer to him that John Belushi wasn't funny at all. He was a great, and greatly talented actor who could pull off comedic bits, but always had an underlying darkness to him, where Farley was the purest and outright funniest person he had ever seen.
In watching Belushi films now, I totally agree with Norm's assessment. Even in Animal House, Belushi is not funny, he's a force of nature and great at the character. In fact, I've never laughed at any single scene of his that I can remember. He was an all-time talent, but would have probably shifted heavily into dramatic film roles had he lived and been quite great at it.

I've watched those Norm clips but more importantly watched SNL and those Belushi movies growing up and never thought he was funny.
I mean his food fight scene in Animal House is a classic clip but it's just not that funny. Otter was funny.
The funniest clip of Belushi is when they shut down the fraternity...and Belushi screams, they took the bar, the whole damn bar...and Otter tosses him a bottle of Jack and Belushi downs it in one long swig and then smashes it against a car and says, thanks, I needed that.
Blues Brothers is funny in parts but often instead of the protagonists.
Farley carries Tommy Boy with Spade as a nice understated sidekick. But Farley is the tour de force but he's also that way subtle at times.

I never thought he was either one

Belushi was pretty damn funny in the peeping tom scene as well as in the “They took the bar!!!”
He was also funny when he was acting like a pirate and pillaging the food king.
He cracked me up with just the eyebrows in Blues Brothers.

I think those scenes are funny because the writing was good and Belushi was a good actor.
Maybe Norm has a stand-up bias but Belushi never struck me as a funny guy carrying a film. Like the Chippendales skit with Farley, Belushi couldn't do that..it would come off as TOO deadpan and not believably absurd.

Belushi was funny.
People need to stop trying to rewrite history.

Belushi was funny because he could emote so well with his eyes, perform convincing prat falls, and had excellent timing on top of being an excellent actor. This thread is stupid.

And on SNL, especially. That was a talented cast of comedians and he was the stand out.

What does this even mean So he wasn’t a writer or a stand up, Al Pacino is a great actor he could not play Bluto or Jake Blues

And Fairley couldn’t do the Samurai

Trying to think of the last thing Norm McDonald was in he did not ruin.

You're thinking of everything Norm MacDonald was in. He didn't ruin anything.

Couldn't you say this about most comic actors? It is different from stand-up and telling jokes. There are different forms of funny.
