J.J. Abrams is racing.

The director has been tasked with bringing four decades of the most popular and longest-running sci-fi franchise of all time to an epic conclusion. And nowadays he’s feeling a bit like Luke Skywalker flying his X-wing down the Death Star trench in A New Hope as TIE fighters closed in — under a bit of pressure, in other words, with the fate of the entire Star Wars universe depending on him.

“We always knew we were going to have three fewer months to postproduction this film,” says Abrams, who took over co-writing and directing duties on the movie two years ago after successfully rebooting the franchise with 2015’s blockbuster The Force Awakens. “So much is still being worked on. It’s literally a practical race to get it finished.”

If that admission sounds worrisome, hold your fire on those tweets.

Despite a deadline crunch to make the film’s Dec. 20 worldwide launch (EW’s interview was conducted in late October), Abrams says he’s feeling “infinitely better” at this very late stage about The Rise of Skywalker than he was about The Force Awakens.

“We had more reshoots on Episode VII than this one,” Abrams says. “We had more story adjustments on VII than this one. We didn’t know if these characters would work, if the actors would be able to carry a Star Wars movie. There were a lot of things we didn’t know. On this, we knew who and what worked, and everyone is doing the best work I’ve ever seen anyone do. But the ambition of this movie is far greater than Force Awakens. What we set out to do was far more challenging. Everything is exponentially larger on this.”

When you look at the three Covers together, you can now visually see why this latest trilogy is an epic fail fest.

I can't get over how much Oscar Isaac in this film looks like desert Nathan Drake from Uncharted 3

But I'm just a loon, right? This wasn't done on purpose at all....right?

The original trilogy was a bunch of white guys trying to kill James Earl Jones. There's a million reasons to hate on these current movies besides them being too woke for you.

You are right with respect to having plenty to hate besides the hatred of white men and forced diversity, however, it just adds yet another level to the stupidity because it absolutely is their agenda here and if you cannot see it you aren't paying attention.

This seems more like a parody of Star Wars at this point. It's just sad.

not to be rude but if you're over the age of about 20 and you care enough about star wars shite to turn it into some racial battleground for your ideals, you probably need to grow up

it's a movie and its sole purpose is to make money, full stop. there's no agenda besides that.

The sub-agendas all aim at making more money. Disney ain't pumping billions into this franchise to achieve social equality.

But it would be nice if they gave us a great story as they hit their quarterly numbers.

I agree with hating on forced diversity, but the empire has been white guys since the 70s.

Wait what?
In the OT the entire Empire was white guys. Vader as well regardless of who his voice actor was.

I don't care about any of that but that line was off.

Exactly, the empire was based off the Nazis for Lucas but with this "New Age" they've changed the heroes but keep the bad guys the same.
