Wow, just finished this last night. To me it feels like there was too much shady shite with the evidence. That key that magically popped out into the open with only Avery's DNA on it. The blood in the RAV 4 with none of Avery's finger prints. Well too much to list here but all I can say is wow..

if I ever get in trouble, I want Dean Strang to be my lawyer

he was easily the most likeable person in the entire series

The guy has the perfect face, speech pattern, and mannerisms for a criminal defense attorney.

no sliminess, no arrogance, just a calm confidence where everything he says just "feels true"

He's getting a lot of praise by the general public, even by people who think Avery is guilty

Every time he opened his mouth, I wished I could have been there to drop him. All these "facts" that the documentary missed coming from him makes me want to do it even more.

I really enjoyed watching Strang and Buting together. As a defense team, I thought they were fantastic.

Strang has the calm, collect attitude and can drop bombshells without flinching. The way he grilled Colburn and the state DNA scientist in a totally relaxed demeanor probably helped a lot in swaying the jury to 7 initial not-guilty votes. You could see Colburn fidgeting while Strang just stared through his soul.

Buting, on the other hand, had the subtle condescension that was perfect for cross-examination and poking holes in the state's case. Every time someone would go, "I don't recall," Buting's little turn where he walks back to his table and says, "You don't recall. Interesting..." was awesome. I felt like he was the perfect counter to Kratz because he sort of employed the same techniques but would make Kratz look like an idiot, especially at the press podium.

Love how Strang immediately owns him on those "facts" following Kratz in that interview. Basically, yeah they left them out because they was even less evidence behind them then the BS you heard in the trial.

Out of the 14 "facts" in that article everyone keeps bringing back, at least 10 of them are completely bogus or irrelevant to anything. Even the corrupt/incompetent judge couldn't figure out a way to allow a lot of it in.

did yall see that funny site about how 90s strang is? I saw it a few days ago so can't remember the name and the way I described it sounds lame as hell but it was really pretty chuckle worthy. If no one knows wtf I"m talking about I'll see if I can locate it.

Colburn calls in Rav4 plates to dispatch. Dispatch confirms the plate numbers. Colburn says 1999 Rav4.
- That was 2 days before the Rav4 was found in Avery's lot.
- The Rav4 - found 2 days later - didn't have plates.
- Colburn has no explanation.

Information about the car was most likely released by the family once she was reported missing.

If that was the case, why didn't he just say so? That'd be the most logical response if that was the case. I'd have to go back and watch to be sure, but from what I can remember, Colburn's response was very strange.

Don't be strange.

It was so odd to me that it was Colburn leading both Steven and Brenden around the courtroom and sitting behind them even in the appeals trials 5 and such years later

Surely they have more officers and could have assigned one not so attached the the case, right?

Have you seen "The Staircase"?

It's a long docuseries that is in the same vein as "Making a Murderer". It's available streaming online. I won't give any specific details but y'all should check it out.

It covers years of a murder case from start to finish. The documentary film makers were on another project when the murder happened and they started filming something like within a week of the murder and follow it all the way through the investigation and trial. They practically lived with the people involved. It's fantastic.

And I will absolutely recommend that NOBODY take this advice to watch The Staircase. It's the actual version of what some people are claiming MaM is: horribly slanted and biased.

I, too, watched The Staircase and was outraged. Then I decided to pick up a book about the case. It was truly shameful what was left out. The filmmakers, were, I believe, 2 French brothers who did the doc you mentioned (Murder on a Sunday Morning) and they did discover pretty shocking abuse of a poor minority in the legal system.

I think with The Staircase they were so gung ho on their meme of terrible American justice that they were totally and completely blinded.

TL;DR - don't watch The Staircase - the guy definitely did it and the filmmakers are derelict in presenting reality.

There is plenty of evidence linking him and the family property to the crime.

Then why wasn't the whole family arrested?

I love them too...BUT: they don't seem to have spent any time with jury on something so essential as educating them on the science of coerced confessions. Especially 10 years ago, the average American juror probably wouldn't have even been aware that such a thing was real.

That was a huge error of omission and could have been the difference (to both cases.)

The thing with the plates and none of her blood found in Avery's home are the two things that make me say hell not to the State's case.
