So a lot of the contestants were given a category based on how they answered a survey.
They interviewed each contestant and asked what each of their hobbies are and what interests they have. Then assigned them a category based on the answers.
The guy who had "junk drawer items" and was a comedian. So they thought he was well-rounded in off-hand subjects and gave him that.
The show is also filmed in Ireland and they were able to film about 1-2 a day. Between episodes, they were able to study their topics between filming. That's why you see the early ones struggle in the first episodes with less prep time.

If I said I liked sports and hobbies were staying active. My subject could be "gym equipment" or "sports movies" or "famous athletes" for example.
Some people got to pick a specific topic if it wasn't popular, international foods.
What drives me crazy are the people who continue to stay on the podium early in the game to try to acquire more squaree.
1) It's a stupid idea early in the show because you're increasing your chances of being eliminated. The only way you lose is being on the podium
2) You make yourself a bigger target with every sqaure you gain and add more attached targets.
3) The key is to acquire 2-3 squares and sit on it for as long as you can. One by one, the big target will get picked on and eventually eliminated. Keep your chances alive by laying low and studying your current and neighboring topics

That was a BS topic. It was "famous people on the Simpsons" then changed the next episode to the Simpsons. I thought it was going to be something like this

I actually like this angle. I figured would be Simpson trivia, which I don't have a lot of interest in, but liked this type of curve they have put in a couple of categories.
