I'm honestly cool with this if the ads stay gone. If they start bringing in the amount of ads traditional TV has that will kill it for me and i'll move to be a regular denizen of the book board

There is a danger here. Instead of all agreeing to long-term contracts on 2 or 3 competing providers (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu - who, may have precipitated this by making their own content, sort of competing directly with their own partners), they will drive a new Renaissance of pirating.

Just as music proved, once folks get used to piracy, it's tough to bring them back into the payment line.

I think a lot of people watch the office on Netflix for 2 reasons.

1 it’s a great show and is very re watchable
2 it being on Netflix makes it extremely accessible and easy to pull up and watch over and over again

Pulling it from Netflix and putting it on an independent provider will shed a lot of viewers who watch it because it’s like chicken soup. Easy and accessible. Many people who love it aren’t going to subscribe to a new service just for this imo

think DCUniverse... DCUniverse is treading water already,

The biggest threat to DC Universe is that it's parent company has a bigger streaming service in mind (which could absorb the DC app).

CBS All Access is more in line with NBC's service, and it's going strong and expanding its original content at a fairly fast pace.

It's not just "what content do these companies have in their libraries." They're making deals with Netflix and Amazon International to subsidize the production of their programming. It's why Titans and Star Trek: Discovery were almost immediately renewed for their second seasons. They had funding set up for Season 2 before Season 1 began to air. If Netflix/Amazon continues to expand their international business by supporting other U.S. streaming services, the smaller services have a much better shot at growing.

This is why I've said for years that companies should be partnering with Netflix to boost viewers of their underwatched shows. Anecdotally, everyone I know that became big fans of Bob's Burgers and The Good Place did so because they "discovered" it on Netflix. They binged a couple of back seasons, then got invested in current airings.

Netflix is begging for marketable content, so why not take a show that you (as a studio) love and want to continue making. Let Netflix pay YOU to advertise YOUR product. The only downside is that you lose the freedom to put that content on your future bullshite service that no one wants.

could honestly see all of this backfiring... I just don't see enough people being interested enough to pay $xx.xx for just the Office with a splash of Parks. I mean, I know it's the most watched show on Netflix and all, but I just don't see this falling out in their favor.

You can just buy the DVD for cheaper in the long run.

It's called syndication and it's how Star Trek became a franchise and why Futurama and Family Guy were able to be revived from cancellation. And while syndication on other stations and networks can give your ratings a boost, their main goal is to bring in additional money to put towards production of the new episodes.

ETA: we are also about to have a 2nd "major" contender in the ring... Disney+ - that makes 2 Major contenders, 3 tier 2 contenders (HBO, Showtime, Hulu), and then services like NBC, WB, Amazon, and DC Universe, etc. I think most people will have Disney+ and Netflix, and continue to cycle through the HBOs, Showtimes, and Hulu's of the world... Amazon will continue to exist because of 2 day shipping - but how much are people going to be willing to pay for even more? Especially during times when people might want sports on ESPN.

There’s not much on Hulu. Amazon prime is probably better. Netflix is the clear leader then probably HBO because of quality.

A function of that under the old paradigm was that if your show was syndicated to TNT or USA or whatever, that audience already had your channel.

If I'm a media company, I want my shows in front of as many eyes as possible. The average person under-30 not only doesn't have cable, they probably haven't ever had cable as an adult. They only find out about shows via word of mouth, the internet, or whatever services they pay for (usually Netflix).

The Office is great on dvd. The deleted scenes are almost like mini-episodes.

Honestly, I think I'd rather pay for NBC than Netflix if that platform has all of the following NBC/Universal shows which I know and love:
The Office
Parks & Rec
Chuck
Friday Night Lights
Timeless
Seinfeld
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Scrubs
Community
Psych
Monk
Burn Notice
Superstore USA
Heroes
30 Rock
Brooklyn 99
Saved By The Bell
Cheers
Golden Girls
The West Wing

Those are basically the shows I got Netflix to watch in the first place, which have one by one all left.

Eventually there are going to be so many streaming services that you have subscribe to (as companies pull their stuff off of Netflix/Hulu and put it all on their own new services) that it’ll be like having cable again because you’ll have to pay for all of the services and there will be many of them you will have to flip between to watch your shows.

I have and I'm loving it. I only pay $40 a month on top of my internet bill and have all the channels I want + HBO.
