It didn't trigger me at all. Sorry that bothers you.

I'm sorry, let me rephrase. Why does that quote make you think the movie will contain problematic messaging?

I don't look to National Treasure movie for commentary on politics of any kind. IF you want to label that as problematic, knock yourself out. I'll call it unnecessary and generally unpleasant, and I'd say that if it was a movie about how being MAGA is the best thing ever.

Theres no quote of the director saying he wants to put politics in the film if it gets made. He actually said it would be hard to avoid, implying he would like to avoid it.
If he's the director, wouldn't it be easy to avoid putting politics into the movie, because, you know, he's in charge of what goes up on the big screen? This isn't like "hey, you got chocolate in my peanut butter. You got peanut butter in my chocolate." He literally holds the keys to the film. "I don't know if I can stop myself."

Have you ever seen the movies? They had to steal the declaration of independence dude. Thinking there cant be some mention of current politics or government is almost ludicrous.
And even then he gave such an easy "hey we're going to find a way to do this that isnt off putting to anyone" quote that toes the line so well.
Yet you still feel the need to be put off? Are you that fragile?

The studio holds the keys to the film.

He's the director of the movie. What gets filmed is his responsibility under his discretion. You know, creative control and all that. If he just shoots what the studio dictates, he's not much of a director, is he, he's just collecting a check.

I don't really get the negative read some of you are getting from that.
The script is written and approved. He says he feels like they have to address modern times, not that they have addressed it in the script... meaning to me that the story isn't some preachy bullshite like we are used to.
I read it as the director wanting to find some way where the movie addresses how divided we are, but uses the history angle to show how great we can be when we come together with a common goal.
Will it work? Who knows. Will Disney meddle and turn it into some preachy narrative? Quite possibly. I'm just saying I'm not out on it yet.

Movies cost so much to make nowadays that the vast majority of the directors do have to deal with studios meddling though.
Directors are mostly quirky, weird guys. Studios aren't just giving them the keys to something that can cost hundreds of millions to make and hoping they don't screw it up.
Not a statement of support for that, its just the reality of it.

I'm late to the thread but I couldn't let it pass without this:

I gotta agree with him here. As Nic Cage was stealing the declaration of independence the first film, the whole time I'm thinking "uhhhh is this movie not even going to comment on our immigration issues or LGBT rights????"
The main character on the series they did on Disney+ was an illegal immigrant.
Jesusita “Jess” Valenzuela,[4] a young DACA woman living in Baton Rouge who finds out that her dead father is part of a secret network of treasure protectors; later Liam's love interest.
My kids started watching and from the scenes I saw, they didn't have any trouble letting you know how unfair it was that she was undocumented and having to hide her immigration status.

Here's the thing, though. They don't have to drag any of that political baggage into this movie. Just do an historical adventure film, it's been done a million times before. Follow the tried and true formulas of the genre and make a good movie. There doesn't need to be any exploration of the modern political climate. Just fricking find Ben Franklin's underwear or some shite. Spend some time in Philly, eat a cheesesteak. Jet off to Paris looking for Ben's whores and the missing DNA. Fly a kite with a key in a storm to power the next puzzle. How hard can this be?

Have you never watched national treasure movie?
They are set present date. The first movie came out in 2007 and was set in 2004.
How do you expect him to make a movie set in the 2020s US government without an accurate portrayal of our government trying to stop them. This is a scene from the first movie that he directed and noone was making tigerdroppings threads crying about it being too political
Now you would see 5 threads complaining about the movie saying that we stole the Indians culture
