Pretty sure that's the neo-noir Night Moves, with Gene Hackman.
Caught it a couple of months ago on TCM; didn't know it existed prior.
What got me about that film was how it paralleled/had connections with the Jeff Bridges film Against All Odds that came out in the 80s:
-- Both Jeff Bridges and Gene Hackman are former pro football players.
-- Both are looking for a missing/runaway young woman.
-- Both travel to exotic seaside locales to find the girl (Florida Keys, Cozumel).
-- James Woods plays a bad guy in both movies.
-- Alex Karras plays a football trainer in Against All Odds; his wife Susan Clark plays the wife of Hackman's character in Night Moves.

It's probably my favorite Gene Hackman movie. If you liked Against All Odds it's from a novel that was originally adapted in one of the great classic noir films starring Robert Mitchum.
I'll let somebody else guess the title

No, this one came out a couple of decades before that.

Hell Is For Heroes is correct. It’s a great catch from just that pic. Nothing definitive makes it a war movie.
Interesting that two late fifties/sixties western television series stars are facing off in it.
Steve McQueen, bounty hunter Josh Randall in Wanted: Dead Or Alive and Nick Adams, Johnny Yuma, wandering ex-Confederate vigilante writing words in his journal and righting wrongs with his sawed-off double-barreled shotgun in The Rebel.
