Doesn't matter--the whole point was that the subject matter hasn't been treated, when, in reality, it has.

Absolutely no one has made this assertion. No one has suggested there has never been a movie that has ever dealt with slavery before.

The assertion is the opposite -- that there are SO many slavery pictures that we're sick to death of the topic. Like we've covered this ground way too much. And to that, I absolutely object. There are likely more serious films on the Holocaust than on American slavery. It's not well trod ground, honestly, and even your examples show that. This is the first movie since Roots to try and document the American slave experience from the slave's point of view. And yes, it is relevant that Roots isn't a movie. Amistad comes closest, but A) it's a courtroom drama and B) the title character is African, and returns to Africa having never toiled as a slave.

I object to the positive assertion made in this thread that we've seen this topic way too many times.

I thought 12 Years deserved it and I saw every nominated film. It told a great story and it did not preach at all. It gave you great insight into guys like Ford (Cumberbatch) who were genuinely good guys but were up against something that was much bigger than them.

Gravity is a technically brilliant film. It didn't really bring much to the table other than that.

So do I. I think it must just seem like it to some posters. Maybe they're projecting their preconceived notions on the whole subject.

No shite. A lot more.

If not, it's pretty close.

And, regardless, it's a good movie. It's not "preaching" anything. It does show the horrific aspects of slavery, but I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that you couldn't tell Solomon Northrup's story without doing so.

How many "slavery" movies are there, honestly? Is there this subgenre of slavery pics I'm unaware of. I can't even think of a good movie made about slavery except Django Unchained, and that came at it sideways. If we're comparing it to the other favorite, know what IS a popular subgenre? Perhaps a more thorough reading of the thread is in order . . .

if the movie's biggest selling point is telling the "story of slavery" again with slight differences, i lose interest in seeing it.

That is a very poor description of the movie.

OK. Name some others that prove your statement.

The good thing, though, is they pretty much pushed the envelop as far as they could this time.

Not even "24 Years A Slave" with an intense arse-whipping the entire 3 hours will win now.

Maybe, it's finally over.

You sound sick in the head.

I'm still scratching my head at all of these alleged slavery pictures that have been forced down our collective throat.

6 whole movies in the past 40 years? Man, what an avalanche of slavery we've been buried under!

Also note that it took a British director, two British actors, and a Kenyan actress to bring the film to life. Like it or not, American slavery remains a very touchy topic even today in America, so the audience and the people producing/starring in the film will approach it with caution, which explains why so few truly great movies about slavery have been made.

1000 times this. A million times...THIS. The simple fact is that we are much closer to never having had a great movie about slavery than to having too many.

I wonder if people would object vociferously to having another Vietnam or WWII movie made.

i already said that Gravity suffers from the exact same issues (and the issues are more of a survival genre anyway)

Honestly, man, this is some tired and weak shite. Who played the race card for 12YaS? I didn't see it. Oh, wait, if you make a movie about black people or slavery or civil rights, then, by definition you're playing the race card? So it would be better if those topics are off limits?

SFP, according to your criteria, it virtually is thematically impossible to make something that, in one form or the other, hasn't been done before. Dude, once again, you're just a gadfly.
