Geek’d Con

“as Disney announced today that the film would premiere on Disney+ on September 4 the same day it opens in theaters — in markets where theaters are open for business.”

I think Disney was counting on cashing in throughout China, but the massive amount of flooding on top of Covid means there's not going to be many Chinese audiences anytime soon.

Two kids and one adult plus food is well north of $50 in a theater. I’ll take the $30 and ability to drink cheaply during the movie.

Let’s be honest here... if you’re Chinese and have family still tied to the mainland, and you trash the CCP as a major Chinese actor... your family is getting disappeared.

There's a world of difference between "trashing the CCP" (which no one asked her to do) and publicly coming out against Hong Kong protesters without even being asked about it (which she did). It was a bad decision then, and it's been magnified now that the entire world is mad at China.

$30 to rent is obscene, but they will make their money back. I will most likely have to cave and rent it

I mean has Disney made a decent live action remake yet? Don’t get why people are so hyped for this one.

My understanding is that it is not rent and watch one-time thing, but you pay $30 and as long as you subscribe to Disney+ you have access to the movie.

$30 isn’t bad if you have a family of 3 or more for a first run blockbuster.

Now how the rental works is important. Is it a one time watch? Can you watch it as many times as you want in a 24-72 hour period a la Blockbuster/Redbox? If it’s the latter then that can get a street or even a neighborhood together for that.

I'd say no, but what we've so far seen of Mulan looks much different in both tone and content from the animated version.

I’ve never seen a rental anywhere near $30. What you said makes sense, but damn it’s a lot compared to the market going rate

Trolls went for $20 earlier this year and that had a much more limited appeal and a significantly lower budget.

As for the live action remakes, The Jungle Book was great and Aladdin, BatB, and TLK were all solid. More importantly for the HoM, they made them a bag, which is why they were made. Keep in mind they are a business, not a non profit.

Given that Xi is as big a bitch as many of his counterparts given his sensitivity to Winnie the Poo references, she gains more praising the CCP than not praising the CCP.

But yes. She could very much also just be a brainwashed CCP shill.

The fact that they are moving the release date to overlap with tenet makes me think that the Mulan digital release will not be a one-off.

Disney knows how badly theaters are hurting and how desperate they are for business. It’s one thing to pull their tentpole from theaters, but to move it to exactly overlap with the first major release in 6 months shows a significant disregard for the health of theaters. Got to think that this is potentially the start of a new trend where Disney release more of their movies straight to digital.
