Meaning, you deliberately wouldn't see because you thought they sucked and upon finally seeing them, were pretty damn impressed.

My current list:
Karate Kid - seriously.
A-Team - yeah, over the top, but IMO a good movie.
Legends of the Fall

ETA: LOTR: Fellowship of the Rings. Yep. Didn't care for the Tolkien stuff even though I liked sci-fantasy as a kid. Finally saw it a year or so after it came out and was blown away and hooked. Have probably watched it a hundred times since.

1. Austin Powers
2. Hot Tub Time Machine
3. Social Network (when I first heard abut it, I assumed it was going to be terrible)

Interesting choice.

Was it much better than you expected, or much worse? If better, why would you think that a movie that is considered one of the best films of all time would be bad? If worse, what about it didn't you like?

Well before I watched it I figured it was dated, there are plenty of movies people consider "best of all time" that I find rather boring. I figured that would be another one until I sat down and actually started watching. It holds up well even being in black and white.

Legit.

Not legit. An outright amazing movie that a film lover shouldn't be reluctant to see.

I'll go with some action flicks:

-Gone in 60 Seconds (new version with Nic Cage)
-Resident Evil (the first one, solid flick, no interest in seeing any of the others)
-Swordfish (without looking, I suspect the same director did at least 2 of those 3)

And most of all:
Chronicles of Riddick. Very surprised at how good it was, definitely better than the average action film. The video game was supposedly excellent as well, though I never played it. Should have given the movie a chance as I remember Pitch Black being generally liked by most viewers.

The Thing - I love it now but for whatever reason I had to force myself to watch it.

Nightbreed - I think it was Craig Sheffer's hair that scared me away. Great movie.

Growing up, my stepdad always commandeered the tv on weekend and watched tons of John Wayne. I could rarely watch what I wanted, so I developed a hatred of John Wayne movies.

Saw "Big Jake" a few years ago and really liked it.

The Fall (I would've never have thought to watch this, but ended up watching it in a film class a couple years back. It is now one of my favorite films.)

Meet The Robinsons (The girlfriend forced me to watch this, but it ended up being not only hilarious, but just as heartfelt as any Pixar movie.)

Napolean Dynamite

The Fast and the Furious

This one will be a shocker - Star Wars "A New Hope".

I was 12 years old, when it came out and I remember being at the movies seeing something else, can't remember what, and the trailer for Star Wars came on. It looked terrible. I know most of you will be like "WTF???", but try to imagine you don't know ANYTHING about the Star Wars universe, characters, story, etc. Then go watch the original trailer on youtube. It's pretty corny. The scene where the Jawas shoot R2D2 with that stun gun thing was edited in such a way that it totally looked like R2D2 was a huge space ship, not a small droid, and these goofy little guys blast it, and it falls over like a toy. I remember thinking, wow, this looks like a crappy B-Movie Flash Gordon thing that's going to bomb.

The day it hit theatres my best friend went to see it and came back raving about how cool it was. He pretty much told me the whole story from beginning to end while we sat under the carport in my dad's boat. I begged and begged my Mom to take us to see it and we went the next day. My imagination hasn't been the same since. We would spend hours playing Star Wars with the other kids in the neighborhood. Dad's boat became the Milennium Falcon, the pedistal seats were the gun chairs Luke and Han sat in to fight off the Tie Fighters, the steering wheel area was the cockpit, and we even took the cowling off the outboard motor when the hyper drive broke. (We got in a lot of trouble for that).

That's awesome.

Back to the thread.

As some mentioned already:

Hot Tub Time Machine
Time Traveler's Wife

I'll add:
Chocolat

Have you seen Pans Labyrinth? If not, watch it. Similar premise.

I'm having a hard time thinking of movies that fit this bill.

Despicable Me - I'm normally enjoy a good animated movie but the little minions looked annoying in the previews. God I love that movie though.

Hitchcock is probably my favorite director of all time but for some reason I didn't really want to watch The Birds. Still not one of my favorite Hitchcock films but it was enjoyable. Still had an eerie feel to it though it was truly the first "animal attacks" movies, which is impressive in itself.
