Shawshank.

it followed it pretty much spot on except for Tommy's fate. The movie was better than the book's.

I've been told that Jurassic Park the movie was better than the book. Simply seeing the dinosaurs etc

Not a huge GUMP fan (the team or the film) but heard the book was absolutely horrible. So that's one.

Okay so you heard from someone else that the book was "absolutely horrible" and from their opinion you classified the book/movie into the topic of the op. Let me guess, you're also a registered voter.

Stand by Me (which is saying something since it was Stephen King)

I was going to say Silence of the Lambs as well.

Sorry, can't take it any longer. While I enjoyed the movie a lot, nothing is as good as the Harris novel. And certainly none of the other movies based upon his novels have matched the books.

No way, no how.

The movie only covers about 150 pages of a 400 page book. It was impossible for the movie to encompass all the information on chaos theory that exists in the book.

I was going to put Juarassic Park in the other thread. The book had way more action. The ranger guy had a much bigger part. He engaged T-Rex's with a goddamn jeep firing TOW missiles.

This film would be better if they had made it rated R. Instead they just used it as a platform for new special effects. It was to CGI what Avatar is to 3D.

I like Thomas Harris just fine. I think all of his other books are MUCH better than the movies they've inspired, but Silence of the Lambs is a better movie than book.

I think a lot of it has to do with Anthony Hopkins, he MADE Hannibal Lecter, when I read the book Hannibal just felt like a crazy criminal but nothing special. Dr. Lecter in the movies was scary and felt real.

On top of Anthony Hopkins, was the casing of Jodie Foster she was PERFECT for that part. They couldn't have found a better Agent Starling.

They both made the movie characters better, more real, more developed than I felt they were in the book.

Yeah, Jurassic Park the book was one of the better works of Science Fiction in the 1990s. There were more raptors, the T-Rex had more scenes that were twice as terrifying, the characters that deserved to die did, a lot that didn't did, and Malcolm was still the shite. Oh yeah, Muldoon was a motherfricking Terminator of dinosaurs. The sequels he wrote to this book, however, sucked in a BIG way. frick Hollywood's influence on literature.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

It's been over 25+ years since I've read those books, and I seem to remember slogging through a lot of it. Don't know, maybe I should give the books a long-overdue re-read.

No. Just no. Re-read them.

He only wrote one sequel and, in my opinion, it was better than Jurassic Park.

Well, once you bring a character back from the dead to provide a story so a movie can be made, you've lost my interest. Which isn't to say I didn't immediately buy the book. I mean, there are men hunting Dinosaurs in it.

I think a ton of this has to do with whether you read the book or saw the movie first. The only movies I have ever thought were as good as or better than the book was when I saw the movie then decided to go back and read the book.

Of course, I hope we are not including movies that someone later wrote books about. I don't think I've ever actually read one of those.

Yeah, that would be all three of my picks. Sometimes they are equal though. I's say Deliverance and The Right Stuff were just as good as the movies.

The Count of Monte Cristo

I saw the movie in theaters and it has become one of my favorites of all time. I read the book and it sharewd very little with the movie. Which is good because in 1600 pages there is no action at all, many unrealistic circumstances, and I am glad so much liberty was taken with the movie.

You've posted some things in the past that have made me question both your intelligence and your taste in movies, but the above quote is by far the worst.
