Movies about an Average Person's Decision and Hard Work to Become Exceptional in a Sport

I come to this board, hat in hand, looking for help.
I need a list of movies that tell the story of an average person's decision and path to becoming exceptional in an athletic endeavor.
I can only come up with two examples right now.
First, Vision Quest is about a good wrestler who "decided that he needs to do something truly meaningful in his life. He embarks on a mission or, in a Native American term, a vision quest. His goal is to drop two weight classes to challenge the area's toughest opponent, Brian Shute, a menacing three-time state champion from nearby rival Hoover High School, who has never been defeated in his high school career." (Yeah, that's a quote from Wikipedia.)
Second, Breaking Away tells the story of an average young man who becomes obsessed with cycling and decides to becomes an exceptional cyclist. (I highly recommend this move.)
I'm not particularly interested in movies: (1) about a team, (2) about individuals who are already incredibly talented, or (3) about individuals who have to overcome difficult circumstances to be an exceptional athlete.
Please help. Please give me movies that fit my criteria.

The Karate Kid? Or does that fall under number 3.

Invincible with Marky Mark is pretty close.

Happy Gilmore is a classic. In case you haven’t seen it.
A guy is really down on his luck. The love of his life leaves him. His grandfather passed away, leaving him to take care of his widowed grandmother. He is rejected multiple times by the sport that he loves. Always told he’s not good enough that he doesn’t have the right attitude. In a desperate attempt to avoid homelessness, and to save his grandmother from abusive healthcare workers, he tries golf. With the help of a mentor that he would learn to respect and adore, he finds that golf brings him the peace and the happy place he has been longing for his whole life.

quote:Of course! Can't believe I didn't think of it.
RUDY
quote:The original Rocky fits the criteria pretty well. Thank you. By the time of Rocky III; however, he's already a champion.
Rocky 3
quote:I'm looking for a movie that involves the decision and hard work to become exceptional. Forest's success comes from his innate ability . . . and the loss of leg braces.
Forest Gump
quote:That works very well! Thank you.
The Karate Kid? Or does that fall under number 3.
quote:Pretty close, but I think it's more about an unknown who becomes known. I don't remember many scenes about him training to become better.
Invincible with Marky Mark is pretty close.
quote:I'm not really looking for an artsy fartsy or highbrow drama. As I recall, Gilmore can naturally drive the ball 500 yards (so it doesn't fit the criteria) and is played by Daniel Day Lewis, Guy Pearce, or Cillian Murphy, right?

How about the story of an undersized trucker who puts it all on the line and bets on himself to take down the 5 time defending and previously undefeated arm wrestling champion of the world?

Rudy is a complete fabrication according to Joe Montana. Nobody liked or even remembered Rudy.

Lots of good soccer movies about underdogs:
Victory
Goal!
The Game of Their Lives
The Big Green
Kicking and Screaming
Edit: Goal! is prolly the one that meets your criteria
