he most criminally underrated movie of all time.... Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert ford.
the way it's shot is incredible. One of my all time favorites.

The cinematography is beautiful and the soundtrack is eerily melodic. The combination of the 2 is amazing. My wife rented the blu-Ray about 4 years back and I watched it twice in a row it was that good.

Atonement is a great answer. I love that movie, and the Dunkirk scene is one of my all-time favorites. That tracking shot is right up there with the Children of Men steadicam shot, though the real technical marvel of that scene is the sound.

Wild never gets talked about, and that film is freakin' outstanding. It got nominated for some Oscars, but to little fanfare. It's a shame it has sort of slipped through the cracks.

A Separation is one of the best films of the past 10 years. It's Iranian, but go see it. Farhadi is one of the best directors on earth. It did win an Oscar though, so maybe it's properly rated.

Doubt is still one of my favorite films. Not very "cinematic", as its based on a stage play, so I can see the technical guys not liking it that much, but what a powerful movie with a great ambiguous end. And Viola Davis rocks in this movie so hard.

Bernie is Richard Linklater's best film. Full stop. And I feel it's been completely ignored, which is a shame, though I have no idea how that happened.

Bernie is fantastic, good one. IRL life Bernie was released and lived in Linklater's guest house.

I think "Filth" fits the criteria of the thread more.

My answer is "The Impossible". Such an awesome movie that almost no one knows about.

I'll go with Ex Machina because it was maybe the 2nd best movie i've ever seen.

Everyone liked the movie, but I don't think it gets acknowledged enough

I don't know about the most underrated, but a lot of Asian films just don't get the views they deserve. War of the Arrows is one of my favorites. It is one man with a bow and arrows against a lot of men with bows and arrows. One Korean hunter against a Mongol horde.

quote:

War of the Arrows is one helluva chase movie. For most of its 122-minute running time, the hero is either chasing his sister’s abductors or the villains are chasing him. In between there’s an enemy invasion, running battles, steely confrontations and even a family quarrel. The key though is the movie’s weapon of choice — the bow and arrow. Compared with firearms and knives, archery is a much more cinematic way to slay characters. It is one of the most popular foreign films on Netflix.

not sure those are underrated ... maybe didn't win an oscar, but that's hardly the sign of quality anyway ...
