Agreed. The first time I saw Scott Peterson, I remember thinking he looked like Dean Cain.

I have to go with Patrick Stewart as Professor X.
This has me thinking of Bryan Cranston's reaction when social media was asking for him to play Lex Luthor. He thought it was ridiculous that as soon as he shaved his head to play a bad guy on TV, people considered him the obvious Lex Luthor.

He was very well known for musicals and stage acting. He was definitely not an obvious choice. He did crush the role though.

Jim Carey in the Grinch. Nobody else could have played that role.

Arnold as T-800

The original screenplay idea for the Terminator was a more average sized creature but when Arnold was cast they went to the opposite extreme.

When Robocop was cast they originally considered Arnold but decided the combination of a big guy in a big suit was too much. And they went with a thin build actor (Weller) instead

I’m not talking about the original idea. Bishop (Aliens) was in consideration and so was OJ if I’m not mistaken.

He’s perfect for the role, period

I was going to call BS on this, so I googled him and you're right. Man, I would have bet anything he was known prior to that role but I guess not.

Very few people seem to get OP’s premise. It’s not who was perfect in a role after you saw the movie. It is: what actor was the obvious choice to play an established character from a book or other source in a new movie involving that character
Yeah, people are missing the OP. He's basically asking who was typecast, and it worked.

Pierce Brosnan was the people's choice to be Bond, before Dalton ever took that role. When he finally did it, he was what we expected.

Let's say they make a movie about Teddy Roosevelt, or Davy Crockett, or some other known character (real or fictional). Who would you cast, maybe to the point that you'd only make it if that actor would agree to it?

By far it's got to be Keith Richards as Teague, father of Jack Sparrow.

this is actually a pretty good one. 1994, needing to cash in on macaulay culkin's last couple fleeting years of childhood stardom, the studio probably half made the film solely to cast culkin in the role, if not completely.

Off the top of my head:

TV - Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family

Movie - Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody
