Right. I was agreeing with you. It is only "stupid" in the eyes of the 815 survivors who, like Locke, don't know a fraction of what's going on.
It's the same reason that vilification of Jack is overblown. We, as the audience, want to impute our knowledge of the island onto a single character who simply hasn't experienced what we have. Think about who we, as the audience, have labeled the antagonist throughout the series:
Season One - The island itself, Sawyer, Ethan
Season Two - The Others
Season Three - The Others, Ben, Widmore
Season Four - The Freighter Crew, Widmore
Season Five - Dharma, Ben, and in many ways, Jack.
Season Six - MIB
And this is with having access to every second of the story. Now, imagine Jack's position in only being exposed to a fraction of these happenings. It's ridiculous to think that someone shouldn't be reactionary in that situation.

If his goal is to get everyone off the island, then smashing Jacob's link to the outside world isn't all that crazy.
