This is out today. Its getting some rave reviews. Currently 95% on RT.

quote:

The tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man and the arrival of a charismatic priest. When Father Paul's appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervor takes hold of the community - but do these miracles come at a price?

Thought about starting this but investing my limited time in Netflix new shows not named Witcher or Last Kingdom is risky. Can anyone confirm it’s good?

Been excited for this one. Thought I read a while ago that this was the project that Flanagan wanted to be remembered for and that he had the story written before Hill House

Matt Seracen hasn't aged a day since FNL

I’m looking forward to this as well, but that Friday night lights actor is milquetoast af. My initial impression is that the casting in general seems below par. I do like hamish linklater tho, and the setting looks great. Might start over the weekend, or wait a few more weeks to get in the mood for the fall & Halloween.

One and a half episodes in and enjoying it. A few things picked up so far (no spoilers):

1. The book the father is reading when the mother is on the phone - is that the book The Haunting of Hill House (from Netflix series)?
2. Love the nod to The X-files and Se7en poster in the room.
3. Major Steven King vibes and nods including Pet Cemetery and Silver Bullet.
4. Episode 2 during Crock Pot Luck, the second song the band plays is Dave Matthews’ Bartender…

Watched the first episode last night. I’m all in

The premise seems pretty obvious however, an albatross has followed Matt saracen to the island in the form of a priest and is going to give him problems until he can rid himself of his guilt

Yeh I mean, he is a tad bland but I loved his character in FNL so he gets a pass from me. I just started this, good so far, but I have a feeling I will have to do a rewatch after to really get everything. The Priest guy just cannot help but play a perfectly natural "creep" in everything

Watched the first 3 or 4 episodes last night. I am enjoying it so far. A lot of questions I want answered though for sure.

I’m hesitant to invest any time in a series that has the surface appearance of yet another attack on religiosity, Christianity, or Catholicism specifically.

I don’t know if this is yet another post-modernist attack, even if incidentally and not directly, but if so, I have no interest.

4 episodes in, and I actually don't get the idea that its "another attack on religiosity, Christianity, or Catholicism specifically."

I'm actually surprised how positive a light it shines on organized Christian religion. It's fairly uplifting. And I expected it to be precisely what you thought it'd be.

SPOILERRRS****
(Not really but if you haven't watched episode one don't bother reading) ***

Yeh, this isn't exactly centered around legitimate catholicism or christianity...more of a starting off point. imo, at least.

Wife and I watched the first 4 episode over the last 2 nights. Really enjoying it so far and the ending of episode 4 was very unexpected.

That said, as much as I am enjoying it, there is one huge plot hole that I’m struggling to look past.

————————-SPOILER————————————————

So Monsignor Pruitt was the island priest for years and years. At least 30-40 is seems. Literally everyone in the island knew him. Riley was one of his alter boys and his parents went to mass almost daily since for ever. It is heavily implied that the Monsignor is the doctors father. I could go on but the point is Monsignor Pruitt was VERY well known by everyone and had been for a generation or more.

Yet, when Father Paul shows up, not one single person on the island (besides the demented Alzheimer’s lady) looked at him and thought “Damn!!! This new guy looked EXACTLY like Monsignor Pruitt did back in the day. That’s weird”

Surely one person at least would have noted that.

Anyway. That’s my one major gripe so far.

I finished it. Thought it was a good watch. I don’t have a lot of new shows to watch, so enjoyed this.

Just finished and SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!

Wow, the ending to Episode 5 is just...a lot. Especially if you watch the credits and just continue to listen to the body burn and to Erin screaming/crying.

Also, I get what people are saying about the monologues being excessive in length and frequency, but they didn't bother me too much.
