I know the Cuba deal was in the works and Roth was behind the Vegas casino takeover, but how was Michael so blind to trust Roth and not listen to Pentangeli at the Nevada party.

He wasn't blind. He had to play the charade through.

I looked up and read tonight the meaning behind "Five Angels" (his last name)....but I still do not know the meaning behind "Frankie Pants"....unless that one is also tied to his last name. Which is likely.

Pentangeli was small potatoes, complaining about petty things, which he even admitted to Michael, who he acknowledged had moved up to drinking champagne cocktails in the Sierras.

That's kind of what I was aiming at. Michael clearly thought Frankie and New York were kind of yesterday's news and lots of old timers fighting about petty things, but Pentangelli had a point that Michael didn't seem to know that quickly...Roth was not a man to be trusted at all. Michael seemed semi-blinded by the opportunity Roth had "presented" him.

I also kind of think Michael had such high hopes planned for the Cuba deal, he thought he could "go legit" after he netted millions upon millions and was in cahoots with the likes of IBM and IT&T and kind of legally owned Cuban entertainment and real estate.

In a way, I think he paid Frankie so little attention because he thought he'd be done with his kind in a matter of months and did not care what happened to the old neighborhood. Coppola was such a genius....the last qtr of the movie or so, everyone looks back at the Good old Days of NY fondly and romantically after their new plans were destroyed and the family was torn apart.

Definitely. "Behind every great fortune is a crime," and this was the story of a family who were never able to grow out of their crime. I guess that's the tragedy of it. It's sad that Roth was Michael's best bet.

Michael was also blinded by his reverence for "Pop," and Roth went back years with Pop.

The greatness of G2 is in showing brilliant, shrewd, Machiavellian Michael realizing how much he didn't know and getting fricked over by people he trusted or took for granted.

He interceded on Roth's behalf in order to get close to him and eventually flush out the rat within his organization. It worked, the rat was Fredo.

He actually says this in the movie. Pay attention.

I wonder IRL how much the revolution in Cuba screwed over the mob? How much were they left reeling after Castro took over?

Michael was never fooled. He knew what he was doing. He knew he had to keep his enemies closer.

Very close I think. Batista could be bought by anyone and Cuba was a combination of Miami and Vegas all rolled into one... Only 90 miles away.

It's no coincidence that South Florida boomed after the Cuba revolution. All that mafia money was pumped into South Beach.

Before the mafia and immigration, Miami was a retirement village and the southern half of Fla was redneck paradise.
