I know Nolan and this movie are pretty polarizing here, but ran across this and thought it was interesting. Might be old news to you.

quote:

After more than eight years of debate over the ending of Inception, Michael Caine has offered some clarity on the movie’s mysterious final moments.

While speaking at a Film 4 Summer Screen showing of Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed thriller, Caine—who played the father of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dom Cobb—shared some insider knowledge on whether Cobb was awake or dreaming in Inception‘s closing sequence.

“When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it,” Caine said. “And I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is.’ I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene, it’s reality.’ So get that — if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”

There you have it, Inception fans. Since Caine is in the final scene, it’s reality. Case closed. The totem falls.

It's been a while. Might need to watch this again.

weren't the kids the same size and age as they were like 10 years prior while he went into hiatus? it has been a long time since I saw the movie, might have to crank it up tonight to rewatch.

Was he gone that long? It's been forever. I know in the scenes you see them playing, you never see their faces......until the end.

Pretty sure they never said it was 10 years. I don't think any time frame was provided from when his wife committed suicide to when he takes the final job to clear his name. Could've just been a few months that he was on the lamb.

I thought the same but apparently two different sets of actors were used for his kids roles and the clothes are just very similar. Wouldn't surprise me if they did that to screw with everyone's minds one last time.

I don't know why I am nitpicking, but wasn't he Cobb's father in law, not his father? I thought he was Mol's father.

I always thought it was pretty clear that it was reality at the end...otherwise it wouldn't really have made sense (which is kinda funny anyway based on what kind of movie it is).

I know Nolan said a while back that the important thing wasn't whether or not it was real or a dream, it was that Cobb didn't care. But I don't agree with that.

Yeah I think older actors were used in the last scene and that’s been a hotly used topic when talking about the ending. I always assumed it was reality but the ambiguous ending was perfect for the movie

Yeah. I think they got that wrong in the article.

I really don't think a large amount of time has transpired with Cobb on the run. The kids look relatively the same age.

Maybe a year has passed. Definitely not 10. And I don't think 10 was ever mentioned in the movie.

I think the kids were wearing the same clothes too. It's been a while but that was the part that made me think. I might be wrong on that though.

I want it to be reality. Leo's character was happy and back with his family, and that's good with me, that's what I wanted throughout the movie and he got it

The clothes are different. Not a lot. In fact, it’s pretty close but if you look closely there are different patterns on the boy’s plaid shirt

That's pretty much the genius of the scene. It satisfies both the group that wants a happy, tied-up ending as well as the group that would rather a non-cliche close. It can pretty much be what you want it to be.

I always likened it to the ending of Shutter Island where the main character has accepted his reality and has chosen to live a "dream" instead.

Ok. I have only seen it a couple times and couldn't remember the fine details, for some reason I just thought it had been several years.
