Maybe I'm simple minded but I've never understood the big debate, the top was about to fall and Nolan cut to be cute. Shutter Island was all about Leo's character constructing an entire fantasy world because he was absolutely unable to face reality, when he was brought back to reality at the end he was still unable to live with it and said what he needed to get the lobotomy, there was an obvious understanding between him and Ruffalo's character. And Tony Soprano got his head blown off in the finale.

Terrific movie with terrific writing. Always wondered whether it was a dream or reality, but I guess what Nolan said actually makes sense.

I don't know why I am nitpicking, but wasn't he Cobb's father in law, not his father? I thought he was Mol's father.

You would be correct.

That's pretty much the genius of the scene. It satisfies both the group that wants a happy, tied-up ending as well as the group that would rather a non-cliche close. It can pretty much be what you want it to be.

I always thought the same thing, but if I guessed on which one it was, I always king of thought it was his real world.

Seemed like it was a dream to me. Wasn't the last scene basically everything he had dreamed previously? *Nevermind, it was answered above.

I wanted it to be real but I thought that after all of it he was just mind f-d.

To go back to what Caine said, the father-in-law was at the house too, but never was when Cobb was thinking back on it or dreaming it.

It's definitely my answer to "what movie would you watch again for the first time if you could?"

It's fun to talk about and theorize but what Michael Caine was told to internalize during his scenes doesn't really matter. The editing of the movie is just as much a part of creative process as the writing of the script, the composition of the music, or the performance of the actors. Nolan didn't accidentally cut off the last 3 seconds of Inception. It was meant to be ambiguous to encourage discussion like this.

There's no "right" answer or "end" to the debate. In The Empire Strikes Back, Mark Hamill is reacting to David Prowse (Darth Vader) saying the line "Obi-Wan killed your father." They later dubbed in the line "I am your father." Does that change what actually happened in The Empire Strikes Back?

The top falling doesn't mean anything in this circumstance.

Totems are something that you personally know that no one else knows.

Yes Cobb uses the top eternally spinning to know he is in a dream, but if the final scene is Cobb's dream, he could make a dream where the top falls.
