How so?

Did you watch episode 6?

The twist at the very end showed that group was integral to the plot. Again, I agree they could have trimmed this one down a good bit but the revelation at the end definitely showed the Colombo’s belonged in the story.

*spoilers*

What did you make of that last minute or so? I was assuming the blonde dingbat with the glasses had ratted them out inadvertently to the IRS. Was it really Jerry's mother?

It seems so.

The Colombos said as much and the FBI said there was no way the IRS had brought the case to them.

It was nice to see two old men find love at the end of a remarkable story.

It was Jerry Columbo's mom that called in the tip to the FBI. They said so at the end.

The Columbo kids (couple with the son working at McDonald's) seemed to have nothing to do with the thing. They just wanted to be on TV (and ratted out their mom to make sure they got the spotlight).

One thing I learned from this is that white collar crime kinda does pay. The worst sentence was 37 months and pay under $400 a month restitution. Jerry kept his house and cars apparently.

That grin on old boy’s face when they asked if he would do it again was pretty funny. He laughs and says “tomorrow”.

That last episode was terrible. They were just throwing shite in there to waste time. This show was a waste of a good story and good production. Needed a much better editor/director

“Hey by the way the DA and one of the people convicted were buddies! Here’s them at Denny’s for some reason”

“Oh hey here’s the random kid of someone, let’s give him 3 minutes of screen time!”

The last 4 episodes were awful. The fat Mormon guy and AJ Glomb annoyed the shite out of me.

Blonde's talk with the IRS was not what led to the investigation. Her tax person (made an assumption and) told her that it was her tip that caused it. But she said she never heard back from anyone about her tip and never talked to the FBI.

The FBI guys said in the first episode that they called the tipster and questioned them at length about their claim. So Blonde is out as the tipster.

Also, the IRS has agents that investigate tax fraud, but these McD winners were reporting the wins on their taxes. Blonde just had trouble actually paying, so she told the story (which the IRS person who took the call may have dismissed as nuts). There are strict rules about the IRS sharing a taxpayer’s info, including the source or amount of his income, with other law enforcement. They can't just call the FBI and say, "You guys should see this tax return I'm looking at." 26 USC 6103.

I don't think we ever heard Jerry's mother herself admit she was the tipster, but two sources close to and friendly with her said she did it, and she certainly had the motive.

They said the game still happens. I can’t remember it within the last five years.

If anyone asks me if they should watch this I will honestly tell them to save 6 hours and just read a plot synopsis of how it went down

I'd tell them to watch the first episode, any of the middle episodes (they're all the same) and the final episode.

I actually read about it or saw a documentary about it some time ago. That's why I was holding off seeing it. Thought I knew all about it already Finally watched it and it was way more than I actually knew about it. I liked the series. Glad I actually watched every episode. That's just me.
