Damn. He was one of the most perfectly cast people on the show.
quote:
He was a good man... No. He was a great man. A maester of the Citadel, chained and sworn, and Sworn Brother of the Night's Watch, ever faithful. When he was born they named him for a hero who had died too young, but though he lived a long long time, his own life was no less heroic. No man was wiser, or gentler, or kinder. At the Wall, a dozen lords commander came and went during his years of service, but he was always there to counsel them. He counseled kings as well. He could have been a king himself, but when they offered him the crown he told them they should give it to his younger brother. How many men would do that? He was the blood of the dragon, but now his fire has gone out. He was Aemon Targaryen. And now his watch is ended.

I would imagine that hell would be dying and not knowing how the frick this story finishes. I hope someone told him while he was on his deathbed.

"Egg, I dreamed I was old..."
And now his watch has ended.

Powerful performance as Mr. Stevens Sr. in The Remains of the Day.
In Four Weddings and a Funeral, he gave one of the most amazing, short, wordless scenes... It's the funeral of their gay friend, and Vaughan is shown with those seated, most probably the father of the deceased, and as the gay lover of the deceased gives his eulogy, Vaughan has this look of sadness, shock, and incredulity...

One of the best scenes in the entire series.
I agree, the show was true to the book as well, which was cool. I like how Jon says, "Who are you?" and he doesn't say his name, he says his relatives names ("My father was Maekar, the first of his name"), and that was all you needed to know that this dude was a badass.

He's finally reunited with Egg

I read the books after Season 3, and saw that season 1 was very true to the first book. It goes into much greater detail about Aemon and the unlikely succession that led to him being offered the throne, but it was no less dramatic, even when I knew who he was ahead of time.
That scene is a real tour de force acting performance, though. He's a blind, frail old man but you can tell there is definitely some Targaryen still left in him. I could watch it over and over again.

93. What a life he lived. I'm glad he was able to finish his final role before he passed. He was perfect as Maester Aemon. Here's my favorite scene of him in the show.
Kill the boy
"And now his Watch has ended."
