It's not that simple. That experience was cathartic for him and he found peace like Sylvia once told him. Then he went back and did the work like Freddy once told him. I really don't think the smile was him thinking of the idea.
I agree. I glossed over in my post, but yes, I agree

Perfect ending. Those that want Don to find happiness can believe that he's still out if California meditating. Those that want the old Don back can believe that he went back to New York to create the Coke/Hilltop commercial.

was also the time in Season 5 I believe where Don was about to get on an elevator and it opens and he stops because it's not there and he looks down and there's a huge hole down there.
Yea, there have a been a couple of jumping moments like that.

I don't think Don ever finds peace; his childhood in the whore house predetermined that. But, he got his creative mojo back in the ashram or whatever it was, and he found some redemption, after years of being a selfish bastard,in helping the motel employee and trying to help the lost hippie girl. And, he comforts the poor shmuck who is everything he isn't
Then he creates one of the world's most iconic ads ever for the worlds's largest advertiser. Don's still a badass.

Don probably came up with, "Where's the beef?" as well.

How about Pete. What a transformation. He was the guy I loved to hate but he was great these last two episodes. Such kind words to Peggy. Glad it all worked out for him.

Has this been posted? From the Twitters....
So its pretty cut and dry now. Don is smiling because he came up with the Coke ad. He goes back to NYC a happier, more secure person. Creates the best ad of all time.

The ending allowed for both. Dick finally did Don's name justice once he realizes what love really is.

And it's not "just a commercial". That's the kind of commercial where your kids will live off the royalties.
ETA: How the frick do some of you not know that commercial? For God's sake get out more.
Especially fans of a period show about advertising.

The true story of how the Coke hilltop ad was conceived is pretty great in itself. Smithsonian has a page on it somewhere if you want to google.

We better look it up on FlightAware to track its progress.

Don realized that he is not alone.

Yeah. Just remember thinking that Duck didn't screw him over after all.
But to have Pete get everything he wanted just to die like his father did?
That would be low.

The crying guy was coke. On a shelf in a fridge, hoping they pick him.
Impressive.

Maybe he goes back and ends up taking care of the kids. Finds happiness.
No, sally was doing kitchen work in the montage at Henry's house
I think this is what bothers me about the ending, don has a moment with Leonard at a hippy camp and that gives him the motivation to go back to New York and write this , according to this board, timeless coke ad. Not Sally or the kids not Betty's impending death, nor his need to be set free from don draper to be dick Whitman. In the end it was fricking Leonard, and that is insulting to me as the viewer.
I think Don did change. He finally hit bottom. He'd tried to hit bottom so many times, but in the end he finally did. Kinda like the opening to the show. He is falling. Basically through the entire series.
When he is alone in a hippie commune, he hits bottom, gets inspiration, applies it to the coke ad, and I believe takes up his responsibilities in life (family). Funny how the hippie movement shirks responsibilities, but for Don, he assumes them. At least that's how I saw it.

I just watched the Peggy/Stan scene. Peggy's reaction was fantastic.
