My theory is that the smoke monster was always there below the waterfall. It consumed MIB's soul and made him incorporeal with it or within it, but was already there. Mother knew about it and used it to help her die, kill the villagers and seal the well.
but didn't she kill the villagers and seal the well before Jacob threw MIB into E.T.'s heartlight?
or are you saying in some way it helped her before that?
Posted on 5/17/10 at 1:15 pm to TDTGodfather
before that. she knew the monster was in there. She may have found out about it through her mother, or whoever the previous protector was.
If my theory is correct, then the light and the dark will always be together (at least as long as the island isn't sunk), sort of like yin and yang and the balance and harmony of life and nature.

gotcha. that makes sense, and seems to be one of the underlying themes in Lost.
Posted on 5/17/10 at 1:21 pm to TDTGodfather
that's very true.
It just does not make any fricking sense that she could have done all that damage by herself. Until I can come up with something else, I'm riding with this one.

I really hope this week isn't as shitty as last weeks terrible episode.

the theory I like the best is that when she was alive, she was both light and dark. Upon her death, and subsequent to that, her "power" was split into two, each son taking a portion of her capability

i don't buy that idea because they weren't even her sons which makes it bullshite because by that logic the light and dark could have been split between 2 random people.

a really good writer would not leave it up to podcasts and fan theories to decide what's what. they would SHOW US in the context of the show. This is where the greatest failure has occured. There is simply no way to fix the mythological jumble they gave us last week and I don't beleive they will attempt to.

If you want a show that is going to tell you everything and you dont have to think for yourself, then go watch Greys anatomy and desperate housewives.
Lost is the first show (that I can think of) that has used (maybe even exploited) the internet and the fans' abilities to acquire and spread knowledge throughout the world to create a worldwide phenomena, which is the reason most people enjoy this show so much. The conjecture/debate that has been created by this show has made it great, and now you want to bitch about the exact thing that made people like it.
Lost fans have about the same amount of loyalty as LSU football fans

guedeaux RA'd this post and it will go out in typical Arab fashion with a bomb strapped to it's chest.

How would she have had both properties at once? We saw that when MIB went down via the creek he absorbed the "darkness", or at least some of it because the light diminished. How would she go about having light and dark simultaneously?

It's a writer's job to tell the story clearly. Leaving some mysteries is fine. What's happening with LOST as of late is not.
