didn't heal libby, anna lucia, alex, etc. which kind of leads me to believe that Kate is much more important than we are led to believe.

How does Smokie know what C-4 is and how to make a bomb with it and a digital watch?

This is a pointless question.
How can smokie transform from a human into a smoke monster?
How can smokie live for thousands of years?
Et cetra.

Overall I was expecting a better episode from start to finish.
The ratings given this episode by the folks who had already seen it were extremely high.
Other than the fact several major characters died, I was a little dissapointed. Too much hunching down in the bushes with guns and doing meaningless planning to get sawyer, kate out of the cages, etc... that is the fluff that drives me crazy about Lost.
I was expecting a Great episode and it was merely a Good one.

A 2.5 hour finale is going to be amazing.
I have a feeling they added an extra 30 minutes of commercials and now they're trying to get us excited about it. Hell, I don't even blame ABC if they did this.

What's up with Rose & Bernard?
last we saw, they were in the 70's - we are making an assumption that they jumped with Sawyer, Jack, Jin, Hugo, Kate, Sayid, and Juliet - but no proof thusfar

nearly 100% accurate to date. Although I will say I've read some stuff that seems like a decoy script &/or decoy scenes were shot.
I am most intrigued upon reading about some scenes that Matthew Fox shot (allegedly) a couple years ago that were in the vault in preparation for the finale.

I should've stated that the island heals selectively
and, it doesnt appear that the island can instantaneously heal those knocking at death's door. But it apparently can speed up the process to non-life threatening injuries. But I think Ben's cancer is the most interesting. It still could be that in the end, the island is just a piece of dirt with no motive, and it was Jacob & MiB doing all the work

I agree 100% - overall, not really a great episode. There was more substance in the flash sideways - which is (a) my least favorite story track, and (b) quite a shift from the previous episodes this year.

Sorry if this has been asked, but I have a question about season 5 finale...
To kill Jacob/MIB, you have to stab them with the special daggers, but you have to do it before they talk to you, right? I seem to remember Jacob telling Ben he had a choice right before Ben stabbed him. Is this just a continuity error? or does this have a bigger meaning?

If MIB can't leave the island until all the candidates are dead, then why hasn't he been able to leave the island in the past?
We don't know this. It may actually be answered next week.

If they keep doing this over and over through time and he is still there, there has to be something else keeping him on the island other than that or every time a set of candidates are dead he would be able to leave the island.
Again, just because he's there now, doesn't mean he's always been trapped. After all, "it only ends once."

agreed. I'm fully expecting to have my mind blown next week. may turn out to be the greatest single episode of Lost ever based on the rumblings.

Also, on the LOST puppet show that came on after the episode last night, Pierre Chang said something to the effect that Jin and Sun went down with the sub but he did not mention Frank. I thought there might be something to that.

We don't have any independent evidence of this besides what has been said by MIB. I think the dagger is just used to show the connection between Sayid's, Ben's, and Richard's choices.

The island may not be done with Frank...

I've been waiting for Kate to die for about 4 seasons but the bitch won't stay down...bullets, Aids, whatever...she should have been written out a while ago. I honestly say she has to be the most annoying character of the show. I rather sit through the "buried alive" episode on a continuous loop for 4 straight days then watch her constantly be conflicted. She lost her mystique for me after she took it up the arse in the cage with Sawyer. Jack finally stopped searching when he found out she was sloppy seconds. That's when I started liking jack. Flawed hero.
I'll never understand the hate for Kate.
She's going to end up playing a huge role at the end. She and Claire are the only 815 survivors left that MIB can kill directly and she is emotionally linked to both Sawyer and Jack.
It wouldn't shock me if she is the last person alive on the island before MIB gets off.
