They were talking again last night about how everyone has a choice (scene with Desmond and Charlie in the car), and of course Jacob was real big on choice as well. This may all come down to the losties making a choice about which reality they want to exist in. The one where they went to the island, experienced love, but also in which many died or went through hardship; or the alt reality where they never went to the island and while safe did not experience the wonders of the island (good and bad). Desmond is going to show them a flash of the alt reality which may spur them onwards to a decision point.

This is probably true, but that is gonna be a tough case to make. 90% of them are better off in the alternate reality. They either die on the Island or life is just worse.

Fate vs Free will. Good vs Evil. The question is, can they make the choice for "good" in the face of having knowledge of their fate?

True, but that means they need to be presented with more than their alternative life. They also need to be filled in on all the consequences of their actions, i.e. how important the Island is (possibly to humanity?)

Would be funny as hell if Eloise is much more than we ever thought, such as maybe MIB's crazy arse mother.
you just want to see an Eloise/Charles sex-scene

Also, what did this episode tell us about Widmore? He has been viewed as power-hungry, evil villain throughout LOST. He certainly seemed okay in the alternate reality. On the Island, his motives seemed less motivated by power and possibly even altruistic.
His treatment of Desmond was cruel, but appeared to be out of necessity and Widmore even showed empathy. Unlike Ben and the Widmore of past.

I disagree. I think Widmore thinks he has to rid/save the island of/from MIB in order to gain the power he so desperately wants. And I'll always view Widmore's empathy as only a means to an end.
I have my doubts as to Widmore's understanding that ridding the island of MIB would also result in the sinking of the island. (which is an unfounded assumption)

I'm guessing everyone noticed the painting in Widmore's office

I think that is more due to the fact that Widmore was so mean to him in regarding that brand of Scoth earlier in his life (this was still when we were on one timeline). After being told one glass of it was worth more than he was by his potential father-in-law, then realizing here's a bottle of it they can get drunk with, I think the irony just struck him as hilarious.

ehhh, i never realized they mentioned the scotch with in the same episode. it doesn't seem as cool.

I think it would be really lame if the ending featured a convergence of the time lines.

another line from "flashes"
penny (after des tells that his dad spurned him)-".....I say we celebrate...we celebrate that fate has spared you from a miserable existence under the employ of widmore industries."

You gurus should keep those quotes and scenes coming. I think we might see/remember some important stuff thanks to ya'll.

What are the other options?
Either one of the two timelines must be destroyed/fall out of existence?
I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around these things.

Desmond goes back pre-incident (pre-timeline split).

Prevents Faraday from getting Jack to blow up the bomb? Making the alternate time line cease to exist.
