Anyone think that Water will be the undoing of MIB? Somehow if they get him in his smoke form and then douse it with water I wonder if that will be his Kryptonite. just thanking out louad

But looking back, what was the point of DHARMA? The polar bears, the experiments, brainwashing, etc. It seems like a lot of stuff that we once thought was uber-important now looks kind of insignificant compared to what's happening at present. Any thoughts?
Oh also, what is the Hanso's role in the whole thing? I know they started DHARMA (and it was funded by the DeGroots, or maybe I have that backwards?) and we saw last night a Hanso owned the black rock. Seems like the Hansos are deep in this thing but I don't know how.
DHARMA more or less was a cool subplot and the only thing that really added to the overall plot was the Hatch itself.

see, and you thought all that DHARMA fire bucket brigade was a waste of time
how little we actually knew at the time when we thought Horace watering the lawn was a harmless scene. Come to find out, that garden hose in Dharmaville was going to save the island

Any idea about the Hansos role in everything? What Ann Arbor has to do with it?

short and sweet- while trying to discover his lost slave ship hansos find the island realize this isnt an ordinary island and create DI to study island properties
more complex answer
quote:
According to various orientation films, the Initiative was founded in 1970 by Gerald and Karen DeGroot, two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan. It was financially backed by Danish industrialist and munitions magnate Alvar Hanso and his Hanso Foundation. The alleged purpose of the Initiative, according to the Swan Orientation film, was to create "a large-scale communal research compound where scientists and free-thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and Utopian social-[static]."
The Barracks video also said that the mission of the Initiative on the Island was to study its unique properties for the betterment of mankind and advancement of world peace.
The Sri Lanka Video of The Lost Experience appears to build on the last statement, explaining that the DHARMA Initiative was part of a project begun in response to the Valenzetti Equation commissioned by the UN in 1967, a mathematical formula that reportedly predicts the amount of time until the extinction of mankind. The purpose of the DHARMA Initiative on the Island was to use scientific research to manipulate the environment in order to change any one of the core factors of the Valenzetti Equation which, in turn, would change the Equation's result and thus change mankind's destiny. They were also interested in researching the unique properties on the Island found nowhere else in the world, again for the betterment of humanity.

More evidence of the destruction/reset theory

Ah, makes perfect sense! I wonder how they found the ship/island though? We've seen how hard it is to find, I wonder how the FIRST person (Hanso in this case) that actively searched for it came upon it.

The Black Rock Ledger was obtained by the Hanso family at some point in the past and they eventually sold it to Widmore. I have to assume they both used it to find the island.

Sorry if this has been discussed, but in one or more of the island time shifts, wasn't the statue still intact? I don't think they ever shifted as far back as the 19th century.

Some people in this thread are crazy....
We've inverted completely, that might have been the single most clear episode of Lost yet, and way too many people continue to over-complicate the show.

If you like chasing a bunch of pointless red herrings, which I refused to do for a long while.
You are ultimately setting yourself up for disappointment. There were some comments in this thread on more "simple" conclusions and people responded with "If that's the case I'll be pissed," or something to the effect.

I don't mind it. It's all about the process for me.

Any moments of disappointment I have are heavily outweighed by all of the good things about the show. For example, I had one of my major theories blown out of the water last night. So what? I still enjoy the show just the same...although I do think this Hell/Purgatory/everyone's dead angle is soooooo Season 1.
