But looking back, what was the point of DHARMA? The polar bears, the experiments, brainwashing, etc. It seems like a lot of stuff that we once thought was uber-important now looks kind of insignificant compared to what's happening at present. Any thoughts?
they needed to fill episodes with something. Make random weird stuff up and worry about it making sense later.

i like where your heads are at but what i mean is ...idk...i just thought there might be some relevance to one giving him water and the other wine. you know? like good/evil or pure/tainted ?

He just explained it. MIB (bad) gave water...Jacob (good) turned into wine. It goes right along with good vs. evil.

why does bad mean water and good equals wine?

I think the water/wine thing is interesting but you're reading too much into it. Just MHO

In ancient times, in desert areas, water was scarce and was viewed as something you NEED to survive. Wine was viewed as slightly more of a luxury and giving quality wine to someone else was a sign of respect.
From that perspective, Jacob was giving Richard something more valuable, respect.

We also got an answer to another huge mystery in this episode that we are taking for granted: The origin of the Others.

just finished my 3rd re-watch and a couple things
first, I think I'm really done with theorizing about the Jacob/MIB origin & relationship. It does nothing for me and I'm really, really now just enjoying the story for whatever it is. I think I'll try and focus only on that which has actually happened.
so, back to the cave. I think the cave is MIB's because of the rock. Jacob gives Richard the white rock, Richard gives it to MIB, the next time we see it, it's on the scale - in the cave. Yes, I'm drawing a straight line and connecting the dots, not always the wisest move.
next, the cracking of the wine bottle. If the bottle represents the island, then, somehow the island is "cracked" - Either that was the incident, the bomb or the sinking of the island in the sideways flash
and lastly, the passage Richard was reading was Luke 4:24. I read the damn thing and couldn't draw any inferences into the storyline
....oh, and Jacob healed the frick out of Ilana quick

"A prophet is honored everywhere but his hometown"
In context, Jesus was respected elsewhere where he performed many miracles and spoke as a prophet (mouthpiece) for God.
Relating this to Lost, Richard was despised by his own people and basically treated as worthless dirt. His "hometown" did not see how special he really was and that he would eventually be the mouthpiece (another word for prophet) for Jacob.

question how did Ricardo so see his wife if she was dead?

Two theories:
Simple one: It was the MIB manipulating Richard to setup the "you can get your wife back" maneuver.
Complex one: Jacob actually can take the form of dead people off island, i.e. Ben's mom, etc and was lying to Richard when he said he didn't get involved. Recall how he gets involved with Hugo after he dies.
