The major questions I want answers to:
Who put Jacob in his current position?
Why does he need to have a replacement? If he is powerful enough to grant immortality to Richard, surely he could handle the MIB on his own once and for all.
Where did MIB come from and what is his back story?
Who created the island?
Why were the characters selected out of all the people in the world for this "game" or "experience" on the island?

Yes! He brought the ship there just for Richard IMO. I think the reason he beat him up was because he knew Richard was confused but had good in him and he protected Richard by kicking his butt so he could talk to him and show him his real purpose before he did something rash like Kill Jacob.
It was also interesting that Jacob told Richard that he also had previously brought other people to the island before but didn't elaborate.

This has been explained ad nauseum.
The game goes as follows:
Jacob is the guardian of the island and he keeps the MIB from leaving. This is his main job. However, he wants to prove to the MIB that humans are good natured. This is his second job. So he brings people to the island to do so. However, this leaves a possibility of MIB killing Jacob by manipulating the people Jacob brings to the island. So Jacob needs a replacement for when MIB is finally able to kill him.

Who has the link to the names of the future episodes?

But doesn't the fact that Ben killed Jacob prove that MIB is right, and that man is ultimately corruptible? There has to be a point them being there, and I'm going to be very disappointed if at the end the timetable is simply "reset."

I agree with some of that.

Well, what question is that?
"What is the island?" and "Who are Jacob, MiB, and Richard and what is their relationship?"
Those were basically answered last night. There is still the question of "why are they in this situation?" But even that was hinted at when Jacob said he was trying to prove that man was good. But it didn't go far enough for me.
quote:Unfortunately, no. I'm not sure if my theory on why Jacob could finally be killed is still intact after last nights episode. I'm not sure how they fit together. I think it's possible but.....
Does it have anything to do with that theory that you came up with yesterday?
....I need to ask this question. When Richard was on the Black Rock and unresponsive, MiB touched Richard. Was Richard dead and MiB brought him back to life (a la Sayid)? Or was he merely awakened? If MiB brought him back to life, then my theory is shattered.

Yes, but as soon as Jacob finds someone who is good, he wins the game.

I dont think he is bringing candidates to the island and it is a risk that he might die. I think it is a necessasity that he dies. That is how he wins the game if he dies and someone one is good enough to take his place. Then he wins his point is proven and the game only ended once.

It's not a necessity, just a side-affect.

Great episode last night!! but for what reason did Jacob bring the Black Rock to the island? It wasnt for a list of candidates, there were no survivors after MIB went through the ship, except for Richard. Did he bring the ship there just for Richard? jacob brings people to the island to prove MIB wrong about the nature of man.

if you go back to their conversation at the end of last season he's been proven right a bunch. jacob has never been proven right. makes me think that will change by the end of the series.

Mee too. That angle is so played out. It sucked on 12 Monkees, its sucked on every other episode of the Twilight Zone. IT would suck badly for Lost. Its gimmicky

yeah, that too.

Was interesting that Richard told Jack and the gang at the beginning that "everything Jacob has ever told him was a lie". I know he was mad and frustrated and being tempted, but honestly, nothing we saw Jacob tell him in the episode was actually a lie. Jacob did not promise him he would be absolved of his sin, did not promise him he would see his wife again, etc...
I guess he was doubting Jacob's cork analogy or explanation of the island.

It's probably the most blatantly lazy use of deus ex machina in storytelling ever. But if it is simply a game between MiB and Jacob, without any real repercussions to either of them or the people involved, I would be pretty disappointed. If it's just a game, I could totally see them going this route.

You are the second person to say they need to know what higher power put them there. What if they are the higher power? I mean if you find out who put them there, are you gonna want to know who put that person in their place?
