Just pretend the episode where Dany is on the boats returning to Westeros the series finale.

that’s an excellent idea and a good stopping point. After that you’d certainly like to see the story play out, but it’s pretty clear that the books are never going to be finished and if the story there can stand on its own (it can) as worthwhile, then so can the TV series.

leave them wanting more

the only final season episode that even begins to compare with the peak of the series is the “knight of the seven kingdoms” one. And that’s because there’s no hamhanded plot advancement or wildly unrealistic transcontinental travel

The politics made the show. When they got away from that the show went downhill fast

Have either one of D&D talked since the finale? Last I’ve heard of them was when their Star Wars project fell through.

Considering the last two books have yet to be written, does anyone think maybe Martin was testing his ending?

D&D swear Bran is the king at the end, and Martin better have a better excuse than “Who has a better story than Bran the Broken”?

Edmure Tully should have interrupted and said “Everyone, including myself”

But Dany doing a “Scourging of the Shire” can make complete sense if done properly. GRRM is a big fan of that sequence and said he wants to end “A Song of Ice and Fire” to end on that note.

Say she leaves Mereen in ruins unlike the show and the people of Westeros are rightfully terrified of her. Then Cersei blows up a good part of the city to show the citizens who is boss. Aegon then takes over the city and is just but a coward and refuses to send troops to fight the White Walkers, but still protects King’s Landing. When she comes down after defeating them demanding their fealty, they say they want Rhaegar’s heir and not her since they’ve dealt with another Mad Queen and her father the Mad King that they don’t want her. Can you really blame the citizens of King’s Landing?

When she knows that Aegon is a fake and that her subordinate Jon Snow is the actual heir to Rhaegar, it makes horrific sense for her to burn down King’s Landing. The people surrendering to her and Cersei being her opponent does not though. She should have blindly accepted that. The bells was bullshite by Dumb and Dumber since they know they couldn’t justify Dany burning the city for that, no matter how crazy she is. That’s almost no question how GRRM intends to end the series, but D&D completely failed to establish the motive and Dany’s insanity for that to occur.

I don't think the happy ending is his style. I think that is another big issue, while everyone pretty much loves the Starks, it not really game of thrones if all the good people have a happy ending.

Which is why the night king should have at least won the first battle

they still could have handled this well in the show, simply by not having Jon snow and danaerys hook up. If they’d kept that relationship professional and not romantic all/most of the stupidity could have been avoided. Her descent into madness would have been earned if there were real uncertainty in the kingdom and in her mind whether or not she was going be usurped by the true heir
