Love PTA movies but what the frick is this about?
Looks pretty terrible, style over substance.
Like Boogie Nights fricks Punch-Drunk Love with an unattractive Roller Girl.
The trailer makes it just look like a hipster, stylized period piece that will have a soundtrack two discs long.

You say that like it’s a bad thing.
I’m a big fan of when PTA dips into the 60s-70s. (The Master and There Will Be Blood both left me cold).

I get excited when I see PTA coming out with something, but I can’t stand when Hollywood makes movies and about Hollywood or in this case, film students. Comes off as pretentious and not all that interesting. Will be interesting to see Hoffman’s kid act though

This is the film that was/is supposed to be about Jon Peters (Cooper), who was the inspiration for the Warren Beatty character in Shampoo, who actually did date and later manage Barbara Streisand. But from the trailer it looks like he's not remotely the main character.
I don't get the homely teenagers storyline though. Getting some Inherent Vice mixed with Once Upon A Time in Hollywood vibes. I'm sure Tarantino wont take kindly to that.

Kind of reminded me of Almost Famous.

Eagerly awaited The Master. Such a disappointment. I don't know what I expected given the subject matter but it stopped me running to every PTA movie blindly.

what does that even mean? PTA has made a few period films set in Southern California, so not sure how this even correlates to Once Upon a Time specifically.
I'm no PTA fanboy, but this one looks great to me - the photography and design especially.

PTA is one of the most overrated hacks in the business who can’t tell a coherent fricking story to save his life. The trailer looks like a jumbled up mess and I have to assume that is reflective of the movie itself. Count me out two times.

I'm a PTA fanboy so I don't really care what the plot is, but if it weren't for Bradley Cooper and Sean Penn I'd be in no rush to see it. Even in his less popular movies he always had DDL or PSH or Joaquin so it didn't really matter what the movie was about but I don't know about this one

or PSH
You’ll have to settle for his clone.

los angeles is the main character in damn near every film he's made

That trailer isn't remotely like Inherent Vice.

It's Paul Thomas Anderson.
He's hit and miss, but when he hits he hits big.
Uncomfortable, unattractive characters, great soundtrack, some nudity... possibly a great story.
With the time frame, the film industry nods, the music, the average looking characters, it has a Boogie Nights feel to it.

I wasn't sold until I heard Tom Waits.

I like just about anything set in the 70s.

Ballsy flex by PTA to cast one of the Haim sisters in a lead role. He has directed a lot of the band's videos, but she has zero acting credits. First film acting credit for Baby Hoffman, too. I guess we shall see.

Most trailers for PTA's movies ever really actually give away much, ie I think Bradley Cooper does have a much bigger role than the trailer makes you think.. I do get a bit of Boogie Nights meets Dazed & Confused vibes tho.
