He was good in Vertigo, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, and the Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, but that's about it.

I really loved Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life. Another great Jimmy Stewart film that often gets forgotten due to his turn in Vertigo is his first foray with Alfred Hitchcock: Rear Window.

Yep. Should have specified Indiana, PA is his hometown. Then a year or so later I ended up working with some people that went to IUP. Thought that was kind of funny. CSB.

I hope you are just kidding. If you think JS was good in only 3 of his films then I am assuming you think he was GREAT in the rest....or your or what they call these day an outlier.

In a recent thread I mentioned this American treasure and I wonder how many younger people have ever watched any of his films.

I would imagine almost everyone has seen Mr Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life at some point. It's less likely for people to have seen his work in Westerns.

As Tom Hanks is to today's biographical pictures, Jimmy Stewart was known for that in his era.

Charles Lindbergh
Monty Stratton
Glenn Miller
Wyatt Earp

Harvey blanket as a souvenir. Thats my favorite performance of his.

Harvey is a treasure! This and Mr Smith are his two best roles (nearly everything he did was spectacular though), and they are two of my all time favorite films.

Stewart is a true icon, and he is a top 5 all time actor

June Allyson was a sweet lady in everything she was in.Hard not to fall for her as wife material.

My dad was a pretty wicked trombonist in his day, and probably has 20+ Glenn Miller albums. Had even more Benny Goodman albums. I bought him some box sets of CD's for both of them. He had my brothers and I watch the Glenn Miller Story and Steve Allen's Benny Goodman movie.

While not a Jimmy Stewart movie, I loved his role in The Shootist!

Doc Hostetler was pretty blunt with J.B. Books, but that's what JB asked for.

How can you make a Stewart list without Rear Window?

All day today on TCM!
quote:

It’s that time again for TCM’s annual Summer Under the Stars festival! Each day throughout the month of August is dedicated to a single actor or actress with a 24-hour marathon of their movies. From the most recognizable Hollywood stars to lesser-known character actors, Summer Under the Stars is a can’t miss event with something for every viewer. And on August 7th, TCM will pay tribute to one of the best: the “aw-shucks” actor with that delightful, unforgettable drawl– James Stewart. With a career that spanned over fifty years, ranging from romantic comedies, biopics, political and courtroom dramas, iconic Westerns, and Hitchcockian thrillers, there’s an embarrassment of riches to choose from for Stewart’s Summer Under the Stars tribute, which includes the following films: AFTER THE THIN MAN (1936); NO TIME FOR COMEDY (1940); THE STRATTON STORY (1949); THE NAKED SPUR (1953); THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955); THE MORTAL STORM (1940); THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940); HARVEY (1950); ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959); THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS (1957); and MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939).

Again,

If you haven't seen The Shop Around the Corner, it holds up extremely well.

I keep trying to "rate" my favorite Jimmy Stewart Films and it's just too damn hard to do because they are all so well acted.

Just so there isn't any question as to my preference...As long as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is #1...the order of the rest don't matter.

My favorite actor from the golden age of Hollywood.

A picture I've seen many times in various WWII books - Stewart being awarded the Croix de Guerre.

He appeared on several tv shows with Jack Benny and always had the "Oh No" look when Benny would show up.

Good comedy.

Jack Benny shows with Jimmy Stewart and his wife
