Men in Black III was a huge surprise and an awesome movie to boot.

I went in to MIB3 reluctantly. It was the only thing playing and the wife wanted to see a movie. I was thoroughly entertained and left in a happy mood. Really just a fun movie.

Man, Iron Man 3 was so disappointing. I loved the setup and was totally into it. When the Mandarin turned out to be some cockney actor.... gah

Other thirds that go against the curse:

Alien 3
Friday After Next (although the second one was meh)
Austin Powers: Goldmember
Oceans 13 (although the second one was terrible)
Blade: Trinity

Others that fall under the curse:

Mighty Ducks: D3

If Return of the Jedi counts as part of the curse, so does Alien 3. Big drop off from first two movies.

I disagree. It is better than Aliens IMO.

I am in the minority on that, but I love A3.

I'm going to say it:
Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie by far.

It wraps up the series perfectly. (Empire Strikes Back doesn't have an ending. It just stops.)

The beginning of it is great, with Luke coming in so cool and confronting Jabba. You think he's defeated, and he just whips everyone's butt.

The cross cutting between Luke battling Vader and the Emperor, while Lando is leading the attack on the Death Star and Han, Leia and Chewie try to blow up the shield generator should be taught in film school. It's just perfect.

The battle between Luke, Vader and the Emperor is the best lightsaber duel in the series. And there's real emotional heft, especially when Vader sacrifices himself to save Luke.

I even like the Ewoks. (Although yeah, the movie would have been better if it had featured Wookies using guerrilla warfare to take out Stormtroopers. I won't argue with that.)

The Throne Room scene is my favorite Star Wars scene.

I just loved how bad arse they made the emperor seem. "Your puny jedi weapon" He didn't even flinch when Luke busted out his lightsaber.

Then the prequels blew it by giving him a lightsaber

I really hope they just completely torpedo the prequals from being canon at some point and make a new set of prequals that are actually good.

The Karate Kid III is definitely a third movie curse. The main villain is great, but everything else in the movie is a complete rehash of the original and the story is awful. While Part II was nothing special, at least they tried to take the series in a different direction.

Daniel, instead of attending college, chooses to open up a bonsai tree shop with Mr. Miyagi and signs up to defend his karate championship (in an 18 and under tournament)? It's so stupid. Ralph Macchio was almost 28 when this movie released.

I never knew the "love interest" of Daniel was played by Blake Lively's sister though, so I guess that's cool.

While this may be true about overall quality, sometimes, a favorite movie isn't about what is objectively "best". Sometimes, it's just a personal attachment. Typically, I find that a lot of the things that those who put themselves in charge of telling us all what is "good" on the internet really only like what flys in the face of certain norms. These norms have become cliches in their cynical eyes, but they fail to reason that they have became cliches because they were good enough to become universal themes.

What makes Empire the "greatest" in most posters minds is:
It's "dark" tone
The bad guys win
The ending is uncertain
It's legitimately scary in parts

What makes ROTJ seem "not good" by comparison is:
It has a happy ending where the good guys win. What a cliche!
It's tone is positive. How dare it not be all dark and depressing and brooding. How formulaic!
Ewoks are too cute to be menacing, what a cynical money grab for toys that appeal to kids! We could have had WOOOKIES!!!! Yeah, well those ewoks also made perfect sense given the plot. Sure they were cute, but they worked. Wookies would have been cool, but Ewoks were a-ok too.
It recycles the "death star trope". This is really the only legitimate grievance. It seems strange to recycle the idea of the first one (only let's make it bigger and close up the trench).

I like ROTJ for a lot of the reasons many people on the internet HATE it: it's hopeful, it completes the story arc of the characters with a happy ending, the scenes in the Emperor's Thrown Room are simply masterful, the Ewok battle is awesome, and Jabba's Palace scenes are really fun (if you take out the pointless CGI musical number).

True - and III is one of those fantastic 80s films that just happen to be part of a trilogy. At the same time, not quite the "film" I and II were, just IMHO (but not a cursed, "terrible" chapter).

Clerks, Mall Rats and Chasing Amy

Technically a trilogy - but more a film universe - Jay and Bob are fringe characters in all 3 films. They don't rise to prominence, really, until Dogma (and ultimately lead J&SBSB). Chasing Amy is the finest film of this film universe, IMHO. So, more than broke the curse.

You're correct about this, but it's still a trilogy to me.

Also meant to add Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead as successful trilogies.
