LAST JEDI SPOILERS: How they should have handled Leia

I am not sure how to reconcile that Leia will not be able to be in the next movie, and yet they kept her as a key aspect of the plotline. Two things they could have or should have done...
1. Bringing her back from the unplanned space walk was clumsy. It actually was a beautiful scene until she started waking up. If someone else (Luke or Kylo) had done it, then yeah I get it. But she has never demonstrated any ability to do such a thing. And the fact that she was generally unharmed in the process of being in a huge explosion, exposed to deep space and then have her fly back in only to recover within hours was a big miss IMO. Knowing what we know now, they could have pulled off the movie without her and that would have been a sad and beautiful tribute to her character. So, that's what they should have done.
Since they didn't...
2) When Luke connected with Leia telpathically and then met her on the ship (albeit in force form), it would have been a beautiful tribute to their relationship as twins to have them channel the force together to allow Luke to take on Kylo. The fact that it took all that Luke had, draining his life force if you will, could have created a great place for Leia to have joined him in that effort, and then they could have slipped into death together, united in their support for their life's cause. Again, Leia would have made a graceful exit rather than whatever they will have to contrive via CGI to make it work in the next movie.
I am sure they will come up with a good solution, but it was awkward watching a character that we know cannot go forward, and yet they portend that she will.
Loved the movie. Wish they would have worked a few different angles.

Simple: kill her when she should have died, and edit the rest of her scenes out or reshoot when she can’t be.

They could just replace her with a robot and get an instant upgrade in acting skills.

I'm pretty sure that at some point in the post-production, after Fisher's death but before release, the higher-ups put the decision in the laps of ILM: make a convincing Leia, and we go with the movie as shot, and will proceed with the next as though there is an actress. If you can't, we will edit and abridge, and attempt to recover something from the train wreck of the outlined plot we've laid out for the trilogy.
Either Leia is going to have a minimal role in Ep 9 (highly unlikely, but never say never), or they really think they can pull this off.
I'm skeptical- it's one thing to have a non-human, it's another to recreate a human that we're familiar with. There was something seriously wrong with both the Tarkin and Leia scenes in Rogue One, along the lines of casual unconscious movements, as well as things like eye contact etc.

Disney has come out and actively said she won’t be.

When she opened the doors after doing her Superman I was hoping everyone would get sucked into the vacuum of space

I just assumed that she stayed behind to help cover the escape with all the talk of the new generation heroes. I don't remember seeing her go out the back.
I agree with the OP though, she should have died when she went out into space. It was a nice scene in which it still showed conflict in Ben.

Honestly, the worst part of the entire movie.
If they idea was to show that Leia was strongly Force sensitive, they could have done it several different ways that would have resulted in the same outcome.
We've already seen Kylo stop a laser blast midair. Why not have Leia stop the torpedoes moments before they hit the bridge which allows everyone but her to escape then, as she tires and the torpedoes hit, she is severely injured.
Literally the exact same consequence without the nonsense of her flying in space.

Is the robot gonna sleep with the entire cast and crew as well?

Then we wouldn’t have the random female vice admiral take command and have her girl power moment.
