Just watched his first doc Brooklyn Bridge last night and it's as phenomenal as any of his works. This one was is only an hour long but it felt like it was 2-3 hours in a good way. So much information neatly and creatively packed. It's very much done in his style and that makes it in my opinion timeless, just good information with good graphics and stories from real people.

Meh

She's hit or miss.

She needs to stay out of politics and quit virtue signaling in every series and in every interview and at every speaking gig imho but hey, that's just me.

Bottom line, and let's be honest, she caters to a certain narrative and always fails to offer alternative historically correct perspectives except to vilify said alternative historically correct perspectives by displaying them in a negative light.

But let's not get into that here. I appreciate what she does, she's very talented.

Rumor is that she's Camille Paglia's long lost paternal twin sister .... but glad to see the hormone therapy allowed her facial hair to blossom.

That's an indictment on our documentary producing system .... and an ode to the U.S. film industry and public broadcasting media machines that refuse to fund and promote fair and balanced perspectives of timely documentary worthy topics.

If it ain't pro-gay-transgender, anti-nazi-racist or anti-2A it ain't showing ... and therein lies the problem and why there are not more great documentarians out there today.

That and the fact that much of the TV viewing public, especially those younger than us Boomers, could care less about true to life accurate historically correct documentaries.

The only thing that ever bothers me with Ken Burns is how he shoehorns Civil Rights into literally every single topic

Vietnam? Civil rights. WW2? Civil right. The Roosevelts? Civil rights. Prohibiton? Civil rights. Country Music? Civil rights. The Mayo Clinic? Yep, civil rights

That being said I still watch every thing he does and consider him the best historical documentary maker on the planet

Pronouns aside, your assessment is spot on perfect.

I mean. Civil Rights were a pretty big issue in several of these topics.

I mean, this would be hard to avoid putting in there

If you're going to cover the climate back stateside, you have to discuss civil rights as part of the civil unrest.

Yeah for some of them sure

But tossing in a section about civil rights and the struggle of the black man in America in the middle of a documentary about national parks is a bit jarring

The Vietnam War one was well done for what it was. Just don't think it was an actual accurate representation of the conflict. He had an agenda to represent. But he does it well without being overly ham-handed.

I have a sneaking suspicion if he did The Civil War doc today it would look muuuuuuch different.

Are you kidding? I had to turn it off because of how obvious the soundtrack usage was. Villain style music whenever talking about the White House switching to uplifting heroic music when switching to talking about the activists and protestors.

I've only seen his Huey Long, Civil War, and Baseball docs and enjoyed them all. I plan on checking out the country music one, especially the parts about its origins through the 1960's or so.

Shelby Foote and his incredibly failed Lost Cause theory stole the freaking show in Burns' most notable series you fricking idiot.

Funny thing is that with History whenever someone one does not feed you the pablum you have learned in the past then they are a revisionist, alt-right or a left wing looney. I remember on this board in his Country Music series how mad some where when he talked about the connections country music roots had to Black music. Anyone that knows shite about modern American Music knows it is rooted in folk, blues and jazz.
