pretty good flick for the most part although the plot could have been a bit tighter. Beautiful film to look at visually.

question: in the opening scene when the engineer is drinking that crap and then he explodes and falls into the water and they show his DNA floating around...what is going onn there? its never really followed up on?

Did the guy deliberatly drink the crap to kill himslef or was that a trick someone played on him? perhaps David?

One of the many questions.

I was assuming that he was on earth and they were starting humans. That goo seems to transform DNA so the engineer transformed himself?

the goo broke down his body all the way down to DNA which floated in the water....thus providing an earth without humans, the building blocks...

say more...Not following how you gathered that form the footage contained in the scene and in the entire movie. not saying that's wrong...

Why would the engineer deliberatly kill himself to create a new earth. seemed like if he was doing it it would be to destroy the planet since it was shown in the movie that they are out for destruction for hte most part.

The fact that they're assumed to have created life on earth. Also, there's a point in the movie I believe where David says sometimes in order to create you must destroy. So that's how I kinda came to the "seeding" conclusion.

ETA - Also they weren't out to destroy life the whole time. They were nice 35,000 years ago. Something happened around 2000 years before the events of the movie to piss them off and decide to kill us off.

Apparently that's how it's done.

Did you see any life before he did it?

Apparently they didn't like us very much, and figuring out interstellar space travel meant we could pollute the whole galaxy.

Scott has come out and said that it's not specifically Earth. It's the perception that the Engineer's could have seeded Earth.

This movie left me with way more questions than answers.

Apparently the new directors cut has the engineer say something?

I enjoyed it much more the second time. I wasn't as critical and just enjoyed the film.

This film deserves an award for the worst case of false advertisement ever.

My jaw dropped at the "Questions will be answered" tag line for the DVD.

there is a youtube video that is about 20 minutes long or so that gives a really really good explanation of the events of the movie(in his opinion)

But this dude had seen the movie several times and read/watched a lot of content from Ridley Scott regarding the movie to help form his opinions.

imo, it helped a lot with understanding "the point"

In the context that the Engineers are assumed to be the creaters of humans(per the whole reason for the mission to their planet), it seems obvious as the movie goes on, that what happened at the beginning was the start of human life on earth.

We don't know exactly why the engineers changed their minds and wanted to kill us. Supposedly it will be explained in a sequel. Perhaps the black goo was engineered to be a biological weapon and they created us to test it on, then realized how dangerous it was and didn't want to risk having us turn in to those things so they decided to kill us. Who knows....

I just watched Prometheus and this is what I gathered. The engineer drinking the goo on the unnamed planet at the beginning of the movie showed that somehow, the Engineers were responsible for introducing DNA into some world (be it Earth, or somewhere else).

Then we are shown the main characters in their search for the beginning of life, which leads them on the wild chase to the planet where the Engineers manufactured the weapons to destroy worlds they were finished or unhappy with.

We see Elizabeth thwart the Engineer's attempted takeoff with the bioweapons and then we see what happens when an engineer is implanted by a face hugger...an Alien (like the ones from the previous movies).

So, the questions that were answered were:
1) where we came from (the engineers), and
2) where the Aliens from the movies came from, engineers implanted by a face hugger.

Ergo Ipso Facto: they made us, we found them, they tried to kill us with biological weapons, Aliens are biological weapons.
