Top 5 villain of all time in my rankings and most likely my favorite. Guy was just pure evil and his calmness was terrifying.

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKK???!!!!!

Tommy Lee Jones' last scene as the Sheriff explains it all.

He basically says there will always be incomprehensible criminals like Anton Chigurh's and peacekeepers like him and his father. TLJ grew up in an era when there was just "right vs wrong".

But he has a dream where he and his father are both sheriffs and TLJ is older than his father in the dream. His eager father wouldn't hesitate to take on bizarre criminals, but TLJ being so close to retirement doesn't want to go all in with his chips where he's likely to lose it all, thus the bad guys will always get away if he hesitates. So he accepts there's no country for old men.

Kind of a nihilistic answer, but the ending is explained in the movie just before the actual ending.

Pretty much all of this. Story is about Bell and what he perceives to be a changing world. The story his Uncle Ellis tells him is to show that evil has always been present. In reality, the world never really changes, we just lose the will to fight it as we grow old.

Chigurh isn't Satan and isn't some unstoppable force. Hell, Llewyn damn near kills him at one point. Like Carter, he has his set of rules that he believes in his mind to be superior to everyone else's. The car crash at the end is perfect. He is cruising through a set of green lights and gets T-boned by someone not following the same set of rules. Chigurh living is better justice for him than if he would have died. This way, he gets to realize that he is just another spec of dust like the rest of us.

My two favorite movies. No Country for Old Men is a damn masterpiece in every way.

The book and movie open and end the same. Very little differs from book to movie

One thing that stands out in the book that I do not recall in the movie is when he returns the money and the dialogue he has that doesn't seem inhumane like the character he is. Professional and business like.

Is it possible someone can get the point of this movie, and still not like it?

I don't usually give people a hard time for not liking certain movies. That being said, I don't understand how people don't like No Country or There will be blood. The acting is so off the charts and the tone so perfect that it's hard for me to comprehend how it could possibly be considered boring or whatever term people want to use. 2007 was such a great year for movies.

Lots of people just want fluff and movies you don't have to think about, I would bet lots of people barely notice all the little things (and big) that make both of those movies all timers. They just want to be entertained, which is fine, but I think you're leaving yourself a little short.

TWBB and NCFOM are two completely different movies (with TWBB being the better film, obviously) , and don't always have to be grouped together when talking about one or the other... just in case anyone was wondering

They're always going to be discussed together because they were the best films of the decade, there's hasn't been a better film than either of them made since, they came out in the same year, and both had nihilistic tones.

Yeah I understand all that. It's just funny how, even if the entire thread is just about NCFOM, we'll still eventually make our way to talking about TWBB. I can't think of two other movies that we treat the same way.

It blows my mind that there are people who don't like the ending. I sometimes watch it on youtube just by itself because it was so perfect.
