I fricking loved it. Is the board pretty unified in loving it as well? Does the show continue to hit it out of the park or does it slump?

The Wire is the greatest work of American art of the last century, if not ever.

David Simon wrote the great American novel of the 21st century and put it on TV.

You will probably dislike season 2 at first because it's such a big change, but as the series goes on you will look at it as one of the best seasons.

A lot of people don't like the second season because it's got a totally new cast of characters and setting -- it focuses on dockworkers. I think it's a great change of pace and the character of Frank Sobotka, the head of the dockworkers union who looks the other way on some shady shite to help out his workers, is one of the best in the series.
To me, the third season is the best season of a show ever made. The fourth season is strong, but it's tough to watch - it focuses on middle school kids and it's so obvious those poor boys at the middle of it don't have a fricking prayer. The fifth season was a little drop off in quality - it's a B, B- compared to the other years. But it wraps up the series nicely.

Season 1 is amazing but to me 2, 3, and 4 are all even better. 5 is good but below the greatness of the first four seasons.

Thanks for posting this. I am about to start it myself. I like just about anything Idris Elba is in.

**MILD SPOILERS**

I was pretty beat up over Wallace's ending...

And Dee's honest moments to the detectives about how the game is in his blood/family and he feels like he has to play it even if he feels like he can't breathe...

Mixed in with the political corruption and the sad stories of the lovable addicts..

S1 just felt like gold.

eta: All the characters are great, but damn I love Lt. Daniels.

It's the GOAT. Once you're done with the entire series check out some reviews and breakdowns of the series outside this board, some of the details are incredible.

It's an incredible show all the way through, one of the best ever.

It's not nearly as popular, and if you're not into a lot of titties dont watch, but he has another show on HBO called The Deuce. I love it. There are some pimps on there that rival the greatness of the thugs on The Wire.

When you're done, I'd give it a shot. The new season is coming up.

I'm a big fan of The Deuce. A lot of folks from The Wire are in it.
David Simon also made Treme, which had many of the same actors/actresses from The Wire. I liked it a lot. It was a slice of life thing about people in New Orleans just trying to make it after Katrina. It's very New Orleans -- the Times-Pic did a detailed analysis after each episode, pointing out Easter eggs. Clarke Peters (Lester from The Wire) was great in it as this stubborn arse Mardi Gras Indian.
