Pretty horrible way to end the show. In fact it didn't end at all. It just stopped. The creator/producer was offered a 4th season of 6 episodes (rather than 12) and declined. I curse the bastard for that.
The show has some fantastic characters, many of them the supporting cast. Richardson, Jewel, Johnny, Wu, and N------ General among them.
Swearingen was a fantastic character and carried the show. Hearst was so evil that you just hoped for bad things. Same with Tolliver.
I got very tired of E.B. Farnham and his shtick. I liked Calamity Jane, but she grew a bit tiresome as well.
Bullock was terrible. I couldn't tell if he was supposed to be like he was or whether his acting was actually that bad. He was probably the only really poorly acted character though.
I strongly suspect that a fourth season would have tied some things together. E.B. might have exhibited some redeeming quality. The acting troupe might have had some relevance. As it was, they were a waste of time.
I could have done with about 1/3 of the cursing. It was so prevalent that it became distracting.
For fans, I will leave you with this.
Swearingen is on his deck. Aunt Lou comes hustling by.
Al says: "Not quick, but she does seem full of purpose."

Wasn’t that much was it?

Most people remember HBO's “Deadwood” as “that show where they swore a bunch.” To put that in perspective, the word “frick” is used 2980 times in 36 episodes, at a rate of 1.56 FPM (fricks per minute). The fan-favorite “cocksucker” is said less, but is uttered more than 300 times
Googled it

Your mancrush got in the way of objectivity. Compared with the rest of the cast he was quite poor.
Speaking of dead ends and loose ends, Wyatt Earp was a worthless interjection into the show. Also planned for future seasons to tie him in?

Good frickin show right there!
E.B. had some excellent dialogue though he was a weird mofo.
Whenever Swearingen the "celestials"

Lot of love for Bullock.
Would it be better if I called him Oliphant to separate the actor from the character?

theres not many of us, but i felt the same. "frickin cocksocker" really loses its effect when its said every 5 words.

My 2 favorite scenes:
Al on his deck as Bullock walks by: "You would not want to staring like that at me"
And of course the fight between Dan and the Captain

Couldn't agree more. I think the writers were all on heavy drugs for the last season. Talk about going out with a whimper. Great show that ended poorly.

I loved Robin Weigert as Jane.
My two favorite scenes: She's passed out drunk, on her horse, as a wagon or two rides by and wakes her. She lifts her head and yells,"COCKSUCKER!!!" She then passes out again.
Second, she's lowering herself into a very hot bath and screams,"OW!!!! Mah SNATCH!!!!"
