The show really won't be the same no matter who replaces Jon.

I don't ever really watch TDS, but just wanted to drop into this thread and address this:
Demitri Martin's show was solid, and he's really funny IMO...definitely doesn't deserve to be named alongside Mencia and Cook, or even Kroll show.

CC will combat this with 36 more hours of Tosh.o reruns
Comeback specials for Carlos Mencia, Dane cook, and Demitri Martin, and 2 new Kroll Shows every week

I like him too, I was just naming off guys they went all in on and failed

All three of your obsevations are correct. Stewart's overly sensitive audience could not withstand the Miller assult.

Maybe a wildcard but I'm thinking Joel McHale could pull it off.

They aren't going to pick anyone the leans even remotely right.
The Daily Show and Colbert were long running shows because they're entertaining regardless of political leanings. Stewart can sometimes get a little up his own a-hole, but his interviews and lambasting of the media are pretty good and will be missed.

I'll genuinely miss the show as it is. Sad to see him go

This. Although, I did enjoy "Mind of Mencia" back in the day. Granted, I also liked "Two and a Half Men" and "Employee of the Month" back then too. Middle school was a strange time, haha.

I used to like the Daily show in the early - mid 2000's, then I felt Stewart was a little to biased on the liberal side and he just became annoying. I stopped watching after that.

I think Jason Jones would be a nice replacement. He's been with them since 2005 and is still only 41 years old. He hosted back in October while Stewart was out. His pieces are generally very entertaining.
I think he also does sitcom work and stuff too, so I'm not sure if he'd want to take on the workload of doing TDS every day.

Whoever they bring in I hope they are allowed to poke fun at the entire spectrum of politics and the media. Stewart was way too one sided.

I hope its not Jones. I also hope its not Norm MacDonald, who was the best name mentioned in this thread. Norm is pretty great, and funny as hell. I'd love it if he came back to do a regular show, I just don't want him to do the Daily Show.
TDS' greatest strength is that it is ultimately a positive, hopeful show. So much of political comedy is just mocking people who try to do things, and making a virtue of disengagement and being too cool to actually care. Stewart genuinely cared, and genuinely wanted to see good things, which is rare in comedy (comedy is inherently mean when you stop to think about it).
Sure, they could snark with the best of them, but the show held in greatest contempt those who tried to sell us fear. The world can be a scary place, but TDS believed it was a genuinely good place, and that's an uncommon viewpoint in political news (ok, they also hired Lewis Black, who is as close to a political nihilist as you can get). I'll miss the show for its optimism.
Also, I'll miss the fact Stewart has the best guests. He actually has authors on who have written substantial works, and he gives them, even ones he disagrees with, an open forum to express their point of view. Sure, he's a liberal, but he also didn't believe that conservatives were evil and he allowed plenty of conservatives onto his show where he would actually let them speak. His show wasn't warfare, it was a place to discuss things. I liked the overall tone of the show.
Not that he didn't have favorite targets and people he clearly held in contempt (McConnell, for example). But overall, the show was at its best when smart people were allowed to come on and voice interesting opinions without getting shouted down. There is no show, left or right, that is like that once TDS goes off the air.

If the replacement isn't a woman or a minority, people (the media and other entertainment types) will completely lose their shite. You can take that to the bank.

Best thing over at HBO for Oliver is that he doesn't have to pull any punches. He has no sponsors so he can go tell the Koch brothers to go frick themselves with a very literal coke can in the a-hole and not have to worry about the network giving him shite about it because coke funds their show
Plus the workload is way less at HBO, which improves quality IMO

A great point, and something I haven't thought about. Honestly, he was probably the most honest anchor in America in that he never fear mongered for the ratings and called out all news media on their downward spiral after 9/11 after the news became nothing but fear mongering. They really need to find a natural optimist to take over this job.

Yeah as much as I want the new host to be a good choice I like Oliver where he is. He gets the whole week to prepare the material and its uncensored which I think he enjoys and it fits his style.
