John Hughes really made the most of John Candy's talents, and saw not only the comedic skills but the emotion he could convey. Both Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Uncle Buck's last scenes stopped on stills of Candy's face. Both capsulized perfectly the more emotional scenes that had just occurred.

(sorry to sound all movie critic here, but I always loved those scenes...)

Huge football fan. Candy and Gretzky were part owners of the Argonauts in the CFL.

SNL dicked him around by asking him to host multiple times, then telling him they were going with someone else. He ended up hosting once.

Some favorite small parts of his:
Career Opportunites
Rescuers Down Under
Heavy Metal

My dad died when I was young. Of the adult males left in my family, one uncle was a drunk who lived in Texas, the other was my aunt's second husband who really didn't care too much for me.

As such, I turned to TV for positive role models. I had 2 main ones: John Candy and Jean Luc Picard.

Candy's roles, especially in movies like Summer Rental and Great Outdoors, showed me that a man can be a dad yet take life as it comes. Be a good father, have fun with your kids, be funny, let the things that don't really matter slide off your back. Get wrapped into fun hijinks. Be unabashedly protective and defensive of the ones you love.

Picard taught me to be stoic when necessary. Be unyielding in the face of adversity. Stand up for what you believe in; don't give an inch when it counts.

I don't think I realized, at the time, that I was learning and molding my life after these men. When Candy died, I was extremely sad, but was unsure why. It wasn't until years later, that I realized why.

Hey Boxcar, that was a very candid post and I appreciate you for it. I think a lot of us have turned to a TV/movie character for guidance/support at one point or another, Captain America for example. Anyway, I loved robotech as a kid, bad arse cartoon.
One movie I haven’t seen listed is Armed & Dangerous with Eugene Levy where they are security guards, very solid flick. But as a kid, Great Outdoors by a country mile. So much so, name of my next boat will be “Suck my Wake”

He was in some good ones mostly already mentioned. I'll throw Canadian bacon in there and though it probably wasn't necessarily his best role I always loved cool running. Spaceballs is one of my all time favorites.

Yes. And The Great Outdoors. He never shot a bad scene in any movie he was in. One of the GOATs.

Candy or Belushi? Both left way too much not done in their comedic lives.

Candy, and for me personally it’s not particularly close
