If your looking for realism in a comedy me thinks you're looking in the wrong place.

Jim Carrey was acting zany in 1985's Once Bitten. I think that predates honey I shrunk the kids by 4 years.

Jim Carey is one of the most overrated actors IMO...his roles are always retarted and not funny.

Nah, they have some good comedy because it is relatable to real life, or you know people that act like said joke.
Jim Carey is just over the top and tries to hard. The Grinch is the only movie I like.

What's your rationale?

Just got done reading an article which discussed the two distinct types of comedies that is pretty relevant to this discussion.
According to this article and its followup:
Comedies during the 80s and 90s were joke-driven, whereas comedies during the 2000s are mostly character driven. Carey developed his career during the former where an over-the-top character was fairly commonplace. In comparison to many modern comedies, his old work thus seems extremely unrealistic.
If you examine Carey's attempts at quality acting, you probably won't be dissappointed. He was brilliant in Man on the Moon and The Truman Show, for instance.

It seems like Jim Carey and Adam Sandler follow the same character formula. Both men are very talented but the old concept gets old quick. One of my favorite actors is Robin Williams. Not only can Robin make you laugh, 30 seconds later, he can almost make you cry as well. Awakenings and Dead Poets Society are two of my all time favorites. I consider Williams to be more versatile and polished than Carey or Sandler.

And Carey is much more versatile than Sandler.

Carrey and Williams both have some nice acting chops. I like Sandlers old comedies like most, but I wouldn't put him in the same category as the other to just as far as ability.
I give credit to actors that are traditionally known as comedians that can branch out and play a dramatic role good. It is painful to watch certain dramatic/action actors try and be funny. It just doesn't work most of the time. I imagine that Tom Cruise is probably one of the unfunniest person on the planet. Either way, point is, I like comedic actors that are versatile.

I'd hope Robin Williams is more polished. He was one of 20 student accepted into Julliard his freshman year and one of two people accepted into the advanced class that year (the other was Christopher Reeve). And then he spent three years studying there.
Adman Sandler did go to NYU so he might have had some experience in their acting program. I think his serious films shortcoming were more of the writing. I certainly didn't like Punch Drunk Love but he wasn't bad in it.
Jim Carrey started at comedy clubs and then worked his way into drama (after a long while being a mainly comedic actor). He's not the best actor but then again, he didn't have the same background as Robin williams.
