James Gunn: Comic Book Movies Have Become Really Dumb and Boring and Genre Needs To Change

“We know about the way cowboy films went, and the way war films went,” says Gunn. “I don’t know, I think you don’t have to be a genius to put two and two together and see that there’s a cycle to those sorts of films, you know and that the only hope for the future of the comic book and superhero films is to change them up. They’re really dumb. And they’re mostly boring for me right now.
“I loved them at the beginning. I was really excited when they first started making those movies. It was about the visual effects when I saw Superman as a kid. I still love that movie. Okay, I know, that’s a guy on wires and bluescreen with this sort of crappy visual effects. And then when Iron Man came out, I was in. You’re able to make a guy fly around who looks like a guy flying around. And that was a beautiful thing to be able to do. But if the movies don’t change, it’s gonna get really, really boring.
“I was always influenced by Dave Gibbons art and Alan Moore’s Watchmen where the costumes didn’t fit the superheroes perfectly, and they had a little bit of a paunch. They weren’t all perfect bodies; they weren’t all beautiful. When they fought, they were kind of getting in the stupid Bartleby thing of getting into bar fights. There are people trying to do some different things with superheroes. So it’s not it’s not 100 per cent a rule that everybody isn’t, but a lot of superhero films are boring. And so for me, I think it’s just about bringing in other elements.”

I felt this way 10 or 12 years ago. Now, I just want them to go away. But it seems like a genre that will never run it's course. People can't seem to get enough of this shite.

Sure but those genre tropes last decades. Literally.

Right, back when there was a total of one a year out of the 300-500 movies Hollywood released in a given year.

Disney won't allow the formula to change. If it prints money they'll run it into the ground until it doesn't. The only changes they'll make is race/gender swaps and slap a "NEW!!!" sticker on it.

This is my sentiment. I thought it was really cool at first but then after a certain amount of time, I just wanted them to end. The Snyder Cut of Justice League was it for me. That was the last comic book film I will be watching for the foreseeable future.

Are you guys really listening to a guy bitch about comic book movies while directing TWO different comic book movies, a reboot/sequel & the third instalment of GotG.
This is on par with the Queen of England's speech on wealth management.

At least marvel is trying to get creative and the multiverse should help that
Posted on 7/21/21 at 7:34 pm to ThoseGuys
Naturally, they should end after his are released.

I’m going to see if the multiverse opens up chances to bring back the A list characters and have more singular stories. Just not all that excited about the MCU future as it stands currently

I consider the 2000 X-men movie the “kick-off” for these ensemble visual eye candy Marvel movies (setting aside discussion of DC for now). It came out when I was 10 and I thought it was awesome. Coupled with the Spider-Man movies, I was in comic book movie heaven as a kid. Then you had some duds: Daredevil, Punisher, Hulk.
2008’s Iron Man, then Hulk, then Thor set the blueprint for the rest of the movies. Always make everything tie together, post credit scenes, Easter eggs, quips, team ups, some deep cut villains, and some quirky songs that don’t quite fit (thank James Gunn for that one?). By the time we got to Phase 2, I was in college and had outgrown the movies because I could see the formula being copy-pasted. Now that I’m in my 30s? I don’t see how these things are still making money. 20+ years of these movies and people still throw money at them with no end in sight. I figured kids would stop thinking they were cool, as subsequent generations do when things become “out of fashion.”
I agree with Gunn (even though he contributed to this shite with GotG) - they’re big, dumb and boring…but so is the average movie consumer, so maybe that’s why it works.

Eh 2 movies a year is nothing.
I mean Westerns quickly ramped to be like 30% of all movies released for like 10 years. We are nowhere near that with comic book movies.

Right. Back when they were already rebooting a Spiderman franchise that wasn't even a decade old.

That's the stuff that will kill comic book movies.

I hope they make twice as many. They’re fun to watch and drive the most pretentious among us insane. Hard to beat that combo.

Stories of people with extraordinary abilities are as old as time and are never going away.
From myths of Hercules to films of The Fastest Gun in the West to IMAX Superheroes, regardless of the genre or the delivery or the century, the stories of the exceptional will never die, mainly because humans are mostly unexceptional, flawed, and vulnerable/mortal.

We haven’t had a great comedy in years and Comic book moves make up like 2% of movies released in a given year if that but yeah they are the problem with Hollywood.
And people who wish Hollywood would stop making by far their most financially successful movies are just outright stupid. You wish a business would intentionally and deliberately hurt their bottom line? What next? You going to tell Ford to stop making the F series? Apple should stop making iPhones? Chick-fil-a should stop selling waffle fries?
Bunch of limp dicks.

They’re agreeable to watch with other people. I end up watching superhero movies when I’m with a group because no one is going to complain about it, and I don’t care enough to get mad if someone is blabbering during the movie.

This is definitely a problem. We were spoiled in the mid 2000s with the Apatow/Ferrell/that crew movies, and comedy just hasn't been the same since. Sure, there have been "funny movies" here and there, but the comedy genre as a whole is almost nonexistant, at least for someone like me. And with the whole new wave of woke bullshite, and everything offending everyone and people losing careers over shite they literally did decades ago, nobody is gonna want to make a comedy that pushes boundaries anymore.
